My great-grandfather, Florence McCarthy, emigrated from Tullig, between Kilfeighny and Lixnaw in 1867.  He and his wife, Ellen Quilter, arrived in Baltimore, USA and settled in Virginia.  There is a Florence McCarthy b. 21/12/1812 and an Ellen Quilter b. 12/07/1827 in the Lixnaw record.  Florence and Ellen m. 24/02/1846.  Their children:  Thomas b. 1848, Katie b. 1852, Mary Ann b. 1854, Johana b. 1856, Denis b. 1857, John b. 1859 (my grandfather), William b. 1861, Mathias b. 1863.  Bold are verified in parish register.  Thomas joined the British Army and later emigrated to Canada

Florence McCarthy is listed as an occupier/tenant in Griffith's Valuation in Tullig with a neighbor Ellen Quilter.  Denis McCarthy was on the property around the Kilfeighny Church/graveyard along with Thomas and Eugene McCarthy.

I question whether the 1812 Florence (parent's Denis and Cathy Behane) is my relative and if so, who are his grandparents.  My Y-DNA indicates that I am not related to the Carthach McCarthy of Cashel.  The Family Tree DNA folks think I'm related to the Ely Carroll family.

Any thoughts or directions I should pursue?

Are there any records from the Kilfeighny parish?  When was it destroyed? How?

  • Mathpar,

Kilfeighny is a civil parish. Roman Catholic records are organised in church parishes, which are in most cases made up of several civil parishes. Kilfeighny civil parish is in Lixnaw church parish for the most part but some of Kilfeighny parish is in Abbeydorney church parish. So the records for Kilfeigny exist in the Lixnaw and Abbetdorney records. If you are inclined towards ruling out Florence born in 1812 because of the large gap in age, I don't think you should. While a 15 year gap is quite big, it is not entirely unusual. While not very common, a big gap like that (or even bigger) can be found.

  • Thanks so much for the reply.  There was a church at Kilfeighny in Griffith's Valuation with a cemetery that is still there.  I assume it was Catholic.  I was asking what became of it and its records.

I will check Abbeydorney.  Thanks for suggesting.  I'm not ruling Florence b. 1812 out, just looking for verification that he's my relative and looking for where my Y-DNA came from.

    My best,

  • Harry,

This link is to an archaeological survey of the graveyard:

This link is to some graves in the graveyard, including an old tomb to a Quilter family:

This link is to a search page for Kerry burial records. Select Kilfeighney from the drop-down menu. Most of the records are from the 20th century but there are alot of Quilters mentioned.
