My paternal (on my father's mother's side) 2nd great grandfather John Edward Dargan Sr. immigrated to the USA in February 1847 on the ship Sardinia. He brought his whole family with him and, surprisingly, they all survived the voyage. He has an interesting claim to fame as he was included in a collection of the Ripley's Believe it or Not due to the fact that he lived in 3 centuries. He was born in 1799 in Clonbroney Parish, County Longford and died in 1901 in Riceville, Iowa. I can not find any information about his parents. Everything stops with him. If anyone can find more information on him I would greatly appreciate it. I realize records from the 1700's might be difficult to find but thought I'd try here.

Thank you,

Annie Sloan Cedarleaf

P.S. the photo I have included is a picture on him on his 100th birthday.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You don't mention religious denomination. RC records for the parish start in 1828 and Church of Ireland records start in 1821. These records are on the subscription site Roots Ireland. However, when I did a baptismal record search for Dargan children with father John or Edward no records came up for Clonbroney.

I did check the 1825 Tithe listing for the parish and there was a Edward Dargan. The townland was shown as Drimeel but I think the actual spelling now is Drummeel. Possibly this record is for John Edward or maybe for his father or another relative.

Can I suggest that you add John Edward Dargan to our XO Chronicles site? https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database  The story and picture are great.

Let me know if you have questions or other info on the children of John Edward.

  • Thank you for your reply Roger.

    The family was/is Catholic.

I had posted his photo on the XO Chronicles site. I went back and added the story.

  • The tithe book is interesting because it also lists a Michael Brady. John Edward Dargan Dr. married a Catherine Brady around 1821. Perhaps a clue to both their families.
