Hello!

My family lived in the Newmarket / Kanturk area in the early 1800s before my 4th great-grandparents emigrated to the US around 1846-1850.  They were married in 1846 in Newmarket - their names were David Ambrose and Elizabeth Leary.  I don't have parent names for David, but Elizabeth's father was named John.

Anyone related - or know if other descendants of either family still live in the area?

Thanks,
Larisa Thomas

  • Larisa,

We may be related by Leary...not sure.  My 4x great grandmother is believed to be Ellen (or some derivation), possibly Leary.  Her name is supposition based on someone else's research.  Ellen would have lived from around 1785 to 1830 or later.  My 4x great grandfather was Jeremiah Sullivan (1778-1848).  Anne Marie tried to help me with Jeremiah, but all records are missing from those early dates.  My Sullivan family is also from the Meengorman/Kanturk/Newmarket area.  I'm doing a large project of all descendants of Jeremiah.

I hope you have better luck with finding records!

Feel free to email me - first initial, last name at gmail.  Would be nice to be in touch with someone researching the same area of Ireland at about the same time frame.

  • Hi Anne Marie - Thank you very much!  Any help is appreciated.

Hi Margaret - My 4th great-grandmother had a daughter named Ellen, so it's possible we are relations and her daughter was named after your 4th great-grandmother.  I don't know any of her father's siblings names, but he was named John, and I estimate he was born sometime around 1800.  Do you have any other information about your 4th great-grandmother's family?

    Thanks,
    Larisa

    Hi again

I can not locate any Ambrose families in Newmarket but on the 1846 marriage record there is a Michael Ambrose mentioned, and a Michael Ambrose was baptised in 1822 in Newcastle West not far from Newmarket, possibly a brother

    No baptism for David

Looking at the phonebook of Cork most Ambrose families are living in Kanturk co Cork https://www.eirphonebook.ie/q/name/where/County%20Cork/who/Ambrose/?cus…

  • Larisa,

Based on the generations we are talking about, I think my 4th great grandmother (who I believe was born in the 1700s and died early 1800s) would be the same generation as your 5th great grandmother.  Ellen/Eleanor etc (various spellings) was *extremely* common, so it's hard to say.  I don't have Ambrose in my family tree from about 1840 forward.  Perhaps we are related at an early generation, but there are no records.
