I am looking for family of James and Daniel Murphy who emigrated to Australia.  Their parents were Timothy Murphy and Julia nee Brennan married 25 Feb 1859 in Newmarket.  Julia's parents were James Brennan and Ellen McAuliffe.  Julia's siblings Ellen, Daniel Brennan with his wife Ellen nee Foley, and Kate also came to Australia.  Ellen Brennan born c 1825 came first in 1866, followed by Daniel born c1832 & Ellen (m 30 Jan 1869 in Newmarket) with their 2 infant children & 14 year old nephew Dan Murphy in 1874.  James Murphy born c 1861-1862 came in 1885.  Kate born c1841 has not been found in immigration although there is a possibility she came first in 1865.  She didn't marry until 1888 so not sure if the 1865 immigrant is her.  Kate died in 1905 and didn't have children so she was unknown to my mother's generation. Told that James and Daniel Murphy had a large family left behind in Ireland but no known names for them.  Daniel & Ellen Brennan were living at Scarteen when children were born early 1870s. Have seen the parish register for baptisms of 2 Brennan children 1872 & 1874 and for Dan Murphy 1860 but couldn't locate James or any siblings through 1860s. Records in Australia for James Murphy say he was born Newmarket.  In 1855 there is a Timothy Murphy with house at Church St Newmarket and also 2 acres land at plot 21 Lower Scarteen.  Baptism record for eldest child of Dan Brennan lists Denis Brennan as sponsor so assume related to the branch descended from Denis who still farm at Scarteen.  Do any of these people fit into your tree anyone?

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you!

I hope someone researching this family gets in touch with you, you have already found some important information about Timothy and Julia's children.

Have you already tried looking at the Griffith's Valuation and the 1901/1911 Census for info about those family members who remained?

    Griffith's Valuation: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS…

    Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Let us know if you learn anything new!

  • I have some knowledge of the Daniel Brennan and Ellen Foley family in Australia.  I had previously located their arrival in Queensland with their children James and Ellen and nephew Daniel Murphy, and therefore recognised your post.  Daniel and Ellen Brennan had another 3 children born in Queensland, - Patrick born 1876, Michael born 1879 (died 1881), and Julia born 1883.  I know some of the decendants of Patrick Brennan.  I have been unable to find any marriage or death record for James.  Daniel Brennan's sister Ellen married Edward Biggin in Queensland in 1871 but they did not have any children.   I found the funeral notice for James Murphy and attach it below:-

The Courier Mail (Brisbane) Friday 1st May 1936 page 1

    Extract: Family Notices

MURPHY, James - The Relatives and Friends of Mr and Mrs T. Murphy, Mr and Mrs D. Murphy, Mr D. Murphy Senr., Mr and Mrs T. Cameron and Families, and Miss Julia Murphy are invited to attend the Funeral of their beloved Father, Father-in-law, and Brother James Murphy, to move from the Funeral Chapel, Wickham street, Valley. This (Friday) Afternoon, at 3 o'clock, to Nudgee Catholic Cemetery.

MURPHY, James, - The Relatives and Friends of Mr and Mrs P. Brennan, Misses N. and J. Brennan, are invited to attend the Funeral of their deceased Cousin, James Murphy, to move from the Funeral Chapel ….........................

I hope that this information is helpful, and thank you for your post.

    Kind regards

  • Hi GM,  Yes I have all this and more.  This is my greatgrandfather's funeral notice.  I've been to Newmarket and Scarteen in Cork.  How are you connected and who are the descendants of Patrick that you know? I also know his family. I think I have found marriage and family of James Brennan (married to Annie Boyle in 1904) but still waiting for his family to confirm it.  The family I've found for him have a couple of discrepanices but I think it is probably just that they weren't given all the facts eg wrong name for James's father in a tree.  I'm hoping someone will have the marriage cert and give me proof he is correct James Brennan or proof I'm not on right track.  Pretty sure it is him though.  Mervyn James son of James is not that common and that is what I'm going on.  All Mum knew was that they went down south. Mervyn was Mum's godfather so they must have had some connection with Queensland in the 1920s as there were plenty of cousins etc who lived locally.  I've found family of James coming into Brisbane from London in 1921 although father James not with them.  Where he was then is still a big query for me.  Hope you are happy to confirm your connection and we can solve more of this puzzle. I've even got dna tests done so working with matches there but most connections know a lot less about their ancestry that I do so not getting any easier.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks Carmel

  • Hello Carmel

My only connection to the Brennan family is that Patrick Brennan's youngest grandson is my brother-in-law. I had been putting together a collection of old newspaper articles as a gift idea, - so my information had been gathered solely from newspaper articles, on-line births, deaths, marriages, and immigration records. I wanted to ask my brother-in-law if he had any other information before replying to your latest post – hence the delayed response. I'm sorry to say that he doesn't have any further information. He did know of Patrick's sisters, Ellen and Julia, but had no knowledge of James. So, unfortunately no clues about James from this end.  If I can help locate any information about James by visiting the State Archives then I am happy to do so – just let me know what I'm looking for.

    Regards

  • Hi Gayle Hello. John might not have realised he knew who you were contacting here. We used to work at same place. I can give you some more info to pass on and I have a photo of Pat & Margaret's wedding that I'd like to give to him. It is one they gave to my Grandma. I doubt there would be any info on James at State Archives since he left Qld so early. However there is info in land records for the rest of them. I wish I could set up caravan in their carpark and spend a week there. I don't drive so not easy to get there. Can you contact me via email Carmel McMullen all lower case at gmail.com and I can give you a copy of the photo and details re land at North Maclean. I have also found that Mervyn was a POW in Malaya. Still haven't heard back from 2 others re confirmation I have correct family. Guess they don't have the marriage cert from Tasmania and don't want the expense of getting it or it doesn't have his parents listed. However I'm pretty sure it is correct family.
    Regards, Carmel
