Couldn't find parents' marriage

I would recommend that you have a look at Joseph & Jane’s marriage certificate. Scottish marriages record the couple’s parent’s names, plus their occupations, and whether those parents were alive or dead at the date of the ceremony.  That should help you decide whether the matches Col has found are your family or not. If they do match, then let me know and we’ll search a bit further.

The variation in spelling of the name was normal for the time. The idea of a single “correct” spelling was not something that our ancestors would have been bothered about.

Thank you, Col and Elwyn, I should have mentioned I have their marriage line and Joseph's parents, according to the document were John McGonigle and Margaret Ann Fowler. But I have connected with a lady who has given me information that suggests Joseph married 2x and so did his father! She believes his mother is Catherine or Catty Mullan which ties in with your info Col and stuff on rootsIreland.
I can only find a birth record with Margaret Ann Fouler as follows

The information on the 1883 marriage certificate would have been provided by Joseph. I’d be inclined to think he would know his own parents names (whether or not his father married twice). I’d be inclined to rely on them. What did the 1883 marriage cert say about whether his parents were alive or dead then? (It’ll say “dcd” if either was dead). That can enable me to try and search for their deaths in Ireland.

Tracing labourers can be difficult. They often moved around to follow the work. They might not have originated in the county at all.

I note the birth of John McGonigal in Liscall in December 1865. I searched the GRONI records for any other births for parents of those surnames 1864 – 1878 but that was the only one.  If Joseph was born c 1861 then that was before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864) and you would need to rely on baptism records to trace him. Liscall is in the RC parish of Garvagh. I searched their baptism records for 1860 – 1864 but did not see his. Nor did I find John’s in December 1865/January 1866. Something of a mystery.

I also searched the Valuation Revision records for Liscall around 1865 but did not find the McGonigal family listed there. Either they moved on before making it into the records, or their house was of too low a value to be listed. There are no McGonigals in the townland in the 1901 census.

The RC marriage records for Garvagh parish only start in 1873 so if John & Margaret married there in the 1850s or early 1860s as seems possible then there won’t be a documentary record of their marriage.

Liscall today is on the Liscall Rd, about a mile west of Garvagh.

I looked for John McGonigal aged 35, born Co Londonderry, in the 1901 Irish census. There wasn’t one.  So presumably he had left Ireland (or died).
