I am trying to find information about my greatgrandfather John Davis born about 1855 to 1857.
He married Susan Flaghertry in 1887 in the Dublin Pro Cathedral. Her father, Peter Flagherty owned a shoe shop in Kildare and it is believed that is where they met when he went in to buy shoes.
He died in St Marys Terrace, Ballybough Road, Dublin in 1934.
He had a daughter called Christina who was born in Derry. She married a James Doyle. He was a Seargent in the Gardi.
I'm trying to find out where he was born. I was always told he was born in Ireland, possibly Offaly or Kildare but I found him in the 1911 uk census along with his three sons, John, Joseph and Robert all working as joiners in Kendall, Westmorland. In the where born column he is first listed as Irish, born in Ireland but this has been scored through and Liverpool, Lancashire written over it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Paul,
I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie (free site) and found the marriage record of John Davis and Susan Flagherty in St. Marys Pro Cathedral in 1878. John's father is listed as John (Joannes) Davis and his mother is listed as Mary (Mariae) Davis, address Kevin Street Lower.
Susan (Susanna) Flaherty 's father is listed as Peter Flaherty and mother as Mariannae.
It seems that John Davis may have been a Dublin man?
It's quite possible that he was from outside the city. You have his parents names so if you continue to search this site you may find a birth record for him.
The other site to search is www.rootsireland.ie. This site covers many of the counties that the previous site doesn't.
Happy hunting,
Anne Dennehy
