  • Hello Bill.

You could try going to www.rootsireland.ie and search for the marrige record for James Collins and the daughter of James Neill.  If you find this it will give you the district in which they were married (usually the brides) and it should give father's names.

You never mentioned the daughter's name so I can't do this for you.  You don't give any date range either?

Let me know how you get on, and we'll see if we can offer any more assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Bill:

There were 13 James Neills in the 1863 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Down and another 24 with variant names: Neil, McNeill, O'Neill. None of the 37 were in Kilcoo civil parish and there were none in Slanes civil parish (which I believe is where Newcastle is located). possibly James Neill was deceased by 1863.

You can search Griffiths for free on the site Anne provided you or use www.askaboutireland.ie

  • G'day kenden...Thanks for responding. The daughter of James Neill was Margaret Neill and she married James Collins 1873 at St Johns Church Newcastle in the parish of Kilcoo. She was born 1850/51 in Newcastle. James Collins was born 1851/52 in Downpatrick ( possibly illegitimate). Their 1st child was born in Newcastle  and registered in Bryansford (Kilkeel) when the father James Collins stayed at Castlewellan. James Neill also died in 1867 in Newcastle and this was registered in Bryansford. At the time of his marriage James Collins was staying in Bridge St, Downpatrick. I have the marriage and birth cert's for James/Margaret and their child. Also the death cert for James Neill. I have heard that the Neills ran a tea room where the daughter worked. James/Margaret and family went to Scotland before 1881 and had two other children in Ireland, both in Antrim.I see from a 1910 Ulster directory for Newcastle that there was a Mrs W.Neill, refreshments, Bay View. Could that be a family member !!!! I seem to have a bit of information but just can't seem to get anywhere. Thanks, Bill
