Hi All
I am looking for the Broe family, it states on my Grt Grandfather Peter Broe's marriage document dated 6th June 1869 that his father was called Jacobi Broe and his wife was called Brigidae sadly no surname for her.
It also states that they were from Roundtown, which i have been advised is in Rathfarnham.
I have emailed Rathfarnham parish church several times, yet they do not
reply.
Any help or advice gratefully received.
Regards
JO

Hi Jo,
Your Gt Grandfather’s marriage record is Peter Broe 9 Up Gloucester Street and Maria Salmon of 9 Up Gloucester Street the marriage took place at St Mary, Pro Cathedral, Dublin North which would be the address of where the couple would be living at the time of the marriage. Peter’s birth address since most births happened at home back then would be the address Jacob & Bridget were living at and where their children would have been born. The children’s birth address will be found on their baptism records if the information was included in the parish record I did not locate a baptism record for Peter Broe where did you find the information on his birth in Roundtown?
I found a marriage record for a Catherine Broe of Grovenor Road and a Michael Hartford of Ranalagh the marriage took place in Rathmines (Rathfarnham area) on 4 October 1863 and Catherine’s parents are listed as Jacob Broe and Bridget N/R (last name not recorded). This appears to be your Gt Grandfather’s sister Catherine Broe, the (RC) Church for Rathfarnham is the Church of the Annunciation where my Crowe relations where parishioners. The RC Church for Rathmines is Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners which was constituted the parish church of Rathmines on 12 December 1823.
There are records at www.irishgenealogy.ie for Broe’s in Rathmines and Rathfarnham the only record I found associated with Broe in Roundtown was the baptism of George Greene and John Broe was a witness. It could just be Roundtown may not have a lot of records online at the moment, but since Catherine was married in Rathmines you might want to contact the parishes above and see what they can find on the family.
I did find a baptism record for a Christopher James Hardford (HartFord) of 4 Hanover Street whose parents are Michael Hardford (Hartford) and Catherine Broe baptism took place in 1871 Dublin North, St Andrew’s Church. Looks like the family moved from Rathmines sometime after the marriage.

Here’s the link for Catherine’s marriage record
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/edefac0011603Since your Gt grandmother is Mary (Salmon) Broe the link below to the 1901 Census is probably your Gt Grandfather’s family and it looks like he died prior to 1901. Mary is listed as head of family on the census.

Dear Maria
Many thanks for your email. I have found all of my great grandfathers children. It seems they moved after the marriage.
They all lived in 3 Rutland Lane in Dublin for many years, as this is the address of all their children. I also have Peter Broe's death record, He died in the NDU Workhouse in on 26th November 1898. He is listed as being married on the death certificate, so i know his wife is still alive then.
I also have his prison record, it states he was born in Kildare in 1844, This led me to a false start, as i beleved his parents were also from Kildare. Also the place of residence on the marriage for Jacobi and Bridget is very dark and hard to make out properly, I thought it read Roundhouse. which is in Kildare.
After emailing several places and having no luck, i then emailed the Diocese of Ireland and sent a link of the marriage to them, they said it read Roundtown. I have an email address for Rathmines church and have emailed them several times yet they do not reply.
I will try the Church of the Annunciation in Rathmines you suppled on your link, many thanks for that i hope they reply.
Although why Peter Broe's prison record would say he was born in Kildare i don't know. Whether its correct or not i do not know. It certainly threw me in the wrong direction. Maybe he was born there, and the family didnt live there, i don't know, maybe they were just travelling through Kildare, or have the boundaries changed since 1844.
Catherine Broe i will certainly look at, she sounds a promising lead many thanks for that.
The link to Mary Broe, you supplied, is not my great grandmother, I have her at Rutland Lane in 1901
Irish Genealogy does not have many records for Roundtown, which is frustrating, but i am grateful they have put them there as i've found most of my people from Dublin there. Maybe in time there will be more.
Roundtown does not seem to be covered in many of the Tithe Appointment books or Pigots Directory of Ireland, maybe its because its such a small area..
Many thanks for the links you supplied and the tips.

Hi Jo,
I checked Thom’s Directory of Ireland for 1852 and there is NO Rutland Lane in Dublin North (City of Dublin), I found Rutland – Place, Rutland Square East, North, West and Rutland Street.
I checked Dublin Street Directory for 1862 and there is still NO Rutland Lane in Dublin North (City of Dublin), I found Rutland – Place, Rutland Square East, North, West and Rutland Street.
I did find in the 1901 Census a Rutland Lane in Mountjoy, Dublin, Ireland and there was a Mary Broe 55 Widow, born City of Dublin (Head of Family), but no children listed for her only Boarders named Penrose. The census lists Mrs. Penrose as Domestic Help so these are definately not her children.
You might be better off contacting the parish of Mountjoy, Dublin, Ireland for information rather than Rathfarnham or Rathmines if the family moved from 9 Up Gloucester Street (on marriage record) sometime after the marriage and lived in Mountjoy, Dublin for a good number of years.

Hi Jo
I am wondering if our families are connected. My Thomas, accoeding to his army discharge records was born in Roundtown as well, He enlisted in the army in March 1842 in Dublin aged 17 yrs and 9 months and I have his complete Army record and a record of his marriage in Dublin in 1844 I have calculated he would have been born around Dec 1823/Jan 1824. Although he enlisted under the name BROE his marriage to Sarah Carroll in St Paul's, Arran Quay was under the name BROUGH which he used for the rest of his life.He was posted with the army firstly to Australia and later NZ where he was discharged and lived out the rest of his life. He had a brother Patrick born approximately a year or so later who also emigrated to NZ and according to his death certificate was born in Dublin with parents John Brough and Mary Keogh. According to all reports I have been told that John was either a Miller or coachbuilder. I have been in touch with a lady in Dublin who is descended from a John and Elizabeth BROE of Rathfarnham who also had children born in the Booterstown/Blackrock area and they can be found in the Griffiths Valuation. Two brothers also emigrated to Australia and started up sawmills which ties in with the story their father was a miller. One brother stayed in Sydney and the other returned to Dublin. The name seems to be clustered around the Dublin/Kildare/Meath area. I have also found a marriage for a John Broe of Francis St Rathmines who married Mary Lynch in 1878. John's . There must be some connection somewhere although I don't know why Thomas and Patrich changed the spelling of their name.
