I am tracing the relatives - parents and siblings - of my great-grandparents, Elizabeth Maguire and Patrick McBride.  They married in the Monea RC chapel, Parish of Ely in 1871.  Patrick's was in the RIC and born in Co.Tyrone but Fermanagh was his first posting.  Elizabeth stated her address as Aghaherish and her father was deceased.  Patrick's father was Terence and he was from Crossan, Co Tyrone.  The witnesses were Francis McBride and Mary Magee.  Patrick's next posting was Co.. Leitrim and then they returned to farm in Drumbinnion, Co. Tyrone where Elizabeth died in 1898, I believe. She is not listed on the 1901 census.  I am almost certain their son, Patrick James McBride is my grandfather. Many thanks.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a baptism record for Elizabeth in Co. Fermanagh though I have found a potential record for Patrick in the parish of Termonmaguirk, Co. Tyrone. The family lived in the townland of Tanderagee. The baptism refers to a Patrick of a father Terence and mother Mary Boyle baptised on 18-Aug-1842. Sponsors are listed as John (surname not recorded and Anna Kelly). Do you think this has potential? There is a sibling Edward too, baptised 04-Dec-1837.

  • Many thanks for your quick response, Clare.  I have now followed up on Terence and Mary, Patrick and Edward.  The dates fit and I cannot find another Terence and Patrick fit.  However, if there were only two siblings, Patrick and Edward, would I be right in assuming it was a family name.i.e parents/grandparents.  None of Patrick and Elizabeth boys had the name Edward as a first or second name.- that I am aware of.  Were Irish naming conventions followed fairly closely at this time?  Also, I forgot to mention that Patrick, seniors, RIC record also stated his wife, Elizabeth's home county was Fermanagh.  Thanks again, for your assistance.  Maureen Mulligan

  • Hi Maureen

I can't say that in every single house and for every single baptism that family naming conventions were followed. In some cases families did name the first son after the father's father and the second after the mother's father, but not in all cases. It is a handy tool to employ as a potential means of confirming information but not infallible!

    Best wishes

  • Hello.  Further to my original post above, I wonder if anyone has any further suggestions one year on.  I have been searching the Griffiths valuation and revision books more thoroughly and wonder if Mary Maguire was Elizabeth's mother.   Elizabeth and Patrick named their first born daughter Mary Ellen.  There are one or two Mary Maguire's in the Griffith's valuation for Aghaherrish,  the distinction being 'of the road' and 'of the mill'.  The revisions are a little more difficult to fathom as my Mary would have died by 1871 ...according to Patrick and Elizabeth's marriage certificate which had no names, just 'dead' for her parents. There seems to be a possibility that James Maguire took over ref. 5 in 1871  and the name James popped up later in the family....my grandfather Patrick James McBride.

  • Dear MBurns:

Many thanks for your update.  It is possible from what you have seen in the revision books that Mary may have been a relation.  I have found that you need to follow the particular parcel of land in the books and then when there is a chage of ownership/occupancy, check the Civil Registration records to see if a death corresponds to that date (or a will for that matter).

You do not state whether or not you have had a look at the Civil Records.  If not, you definitely should and they are available at the link below:

If you have further questions, please come back to me on this thread.

    All the best,

    Jane.

  • Thanks for your reply, Jane .  I looked up death records for the period but, of course, there are so many Mary Maguires. Civil Records did not reveal anything relevant for the period.  However, I found entries in The Belfast Gazette, for 1929 for Holdings subject to Judicial Rents and they indicate Bernard, Thomas and Peter Maguire were still in Aghaherrish townland.  I then looked up the current White Pages and there are still Maguires in this small townland so I think I will contact them, by mail initially..  They may at least be able to put me in touch with someone knowledgeable about family history for Aghaherrish.  Cheers.  Maureen.

  • Further to my previous post, I have advanced a little with my research. I will be again visiting Northern Ireland, from Australia, in late August this year so keen for more information.  I am now researching my paternal Great -great-grandparents , names uncertain, possibly James and Mary Maguire   I would be very grateful for any assistance, please to  follow up, or confirm ,my research.  Many thanks.

Further to the details given on Elizabeth’s marriage certificate re  Aghaherrish, I have researched the Griffith’s valuations and the revisions.  Given naming patterns,  Elizabeth’s mother could have been Mary Maguire?  There are two in the Valuations…Mary, of the road and Mary, of the Mill.

1864-1866           Houses 4, 5 were occupied by Mary (of the Road) and No 11 was (Mary of the Mill)

1871                      No 5 is now occupied by James Maguire

1882                      No 6 is now also occupied by Mary (of the Road)  House off land.

A Mary Maguire, widow,  died 11th Jan,1886 (D/1886/113/1013/4/221)….Aghaherrish, son James in attendance. (And, Elizabeth returned to Fermanagh in 1875 for the birth of Francis...see below)

1890 -                  No 4, 5 and 10 are occupied by Peter, James and Rose Maguire

No 11 and 12 by Mary (of the Mill), Jane Britton  and James.

By 1891                11 and 12 are occupied by James Maguire and Jane Britton, so perhaps Mary (of the Mill) died at this time.

In the 1901 and 1911 census’, there is the family of  James Maguire and also a 73 yo Mary Maguire…maybe Elizabeth’s older sister, named after her mother?

    My Great-grandparents are.

    Elizabeth Maguire  (C1844 – 25 March 1898) m.  Patrick McBride (c1840 - 05 Jan 1925) (my great-grandparents)

Elizabeth stated her residence as Aghaherrish (townland), Co Fermanagh on her marriage certificate.  She also stated her father was ‘Dead’ .  There was no requirement to state her mother’s name at that time.  Elizabeth died in Drumbinnion, Co Tyrone.

    1. Patrick McBride was born in Co. Tyrone c 1840.  He died in 05 January 1925 in Drumbinnion, Co Tyrone.  His son, Francis, was present at his death.
    2.  Patrick joined the RIC when he was 20yo and was posted to Fermanagh.  I assume he met Elizabeth there and they were married 11 May 1871 in the RC Chapel in Monea.  Witnesses were Francis McBride and Mary Magee.  Patrick was then transferred to County Leitrim as RIC constables could not serve in their home county or that of their wife.

    Children of Elizabeth and Patrick:

Mary Ellen McBride, b. 20 Jul 1872, Drumshanbo. Co Leitrim

Francis McBride, b. 22 May 1875, Co Fermanagh

Margaret McBride, b. 06 Oct 1878, Keshcarrigan, Co Leitrim

Catherine McBride, b. 09 Dec 1879, Keshcarrigan, Co. Leitrim
