Recently found out my x3 great grandpa may have had another daughter Eleanor with partner/wife.

Eleanor married James Smyth in 1870 in Maquiresbridge.

Wondering if its possible to see who Eleanors mum is? So far ive drawn a blank.

  • Looking at the marriage certificate it looks as though Eleanor lived at Killyrover. (There’s a James Cassidy listed as farming there in Griffiths). Her birth is before the start of statutory birth registration so you would need to trawl through the parish baptisms to find hers. Aghalurcher RC’s records start in 1835 and are on-line free on the National Library site. Hopefully Eleanor was born after 1835:

The James Cassidy of Killyrover died 22.1.1878 aged 81. He was a widower.

Probate abstract: Letters of Administration of the personal estate of James Cassidy late of Killyrover County Fermanagh Farmer deceased who died 22 January 1878 at same place were granted at Armagh to Catherine Smith (Wife of Thomas Smith Farmer) of Killyrover (Maguiresbridge) aforesaid a Daughter of said deceased.

Catherine Smith died 9.10.1896 aged 61 at Killyrover.

    Thomas Smith/Smyth in 1901:

  • I would search the parish records for Catherine’s baptism 1853 plus or minus 5 years. You could also search the deaths registered in Lisnaskea 1864 – 1878 to see if you can find Catherine’s mother that way. I can only see 2 female Cassidy deaths that might fit. Ann C in 1864 aged 40 and Mary C aged 52 in 1867.  There are plenty of others but they all seem too old or too young. Neither of those deaths is available free yet, but you can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Of course if she died before 1864, there won’t be a death certificate and since the RC church generally didn’t keep burial records it may be very hard to find any record of that death, unless she has a gravestone.
