Burke/Queeny

Hi Dave

I have some Burkes intermarried with my Dooley family.  Thomas Burke b 1814 Kilcooly, Galway married Julia Flaherty, children Michael, Patrick, Mary, Bridget, Mary Teresa, Hannah, Margaret, Catherine, John and thomas.  The original Thomas Burke b 1816 was the son of Thomas Burke and Mary unknown.

This family settled in Co Durham, England and the some of the children seemed to settle in the USA, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

Many thanks for leaving your genealogy message.  I am familiar with Caltra area. If you would like, I will have a look at the church records for that period of time and seek any additional information. Burkes is a common name in the area, but I am not that familiar with the surname Queeney?

I've attached the information I have for my Great Grand Mother's baptisimal.  If you can look at the church records, I would be most greatful. 

I'd love to visit the church where she was baptised if we can find out where that was.

I've been interested in the Queeny family myself.  Although I have no direct connection, Mary Queeny was the godmother of my gr.gr. grandfather in Baltimore Maryland in 1858 (Martin Kennedy).  Queeny is an unusual name and when I've looked in Tithe Applotment or Griffith's Valuation data I find them only in a very few locations, particularly concentrated in Taghboy or Killeroran area of Galway/Roscommon very near Caltra.  In this same area are many of my other family names.  However, since there do not appear to be any church records for that area that exist before my family members departed in 1843, I've not been able to make any headway in pinning down my families precise origins.  But the Queeny's might be easier to pin down!   Best of luck to you.  I'm trying to localize my family origins for a trip that we are taking this summer.

My grandfather James Richard Burke was born February 1892 to Thomas Burke and Mary (Fahey) Burke ( married 1886) in the village of Lincoln University, Chester County Pennsylvania. Thomas was the son of Patrick Burke who is buried in St. Charles Cemetery, Oakview (Upper Darby) PA. I have found that Thomas had a brother James, but have not researched to find any other siblings. I believe they emigrated to the Unites States in 1880.  I have no evidence that Patrick is the same Patrick Burke who descends from your Thomas and Julia, or who married Mary Queeny, but your letter may shed some light.

I obtained information from the East Galway Family History Society regarding the Burke/Queeny family, and added some of my own research from Pennsylvania.

Patrick Burke - born 1774, died April 1,1864, Clonbrock District (my great-great-great grandfather)

Margaret Burke (O'Neill) born 1797, died May 4, 1883, Clonbrock District

Patrick Burke - Born 1834, died 1905 (Emigrated to US 1884), buried Kellyville (Clifton Heights PA)

Mary Burke (Queeney)- Born 1835, died  April 3, 1923 (emigrated w/Patrick) buried Kellyville (Clifton Heights PA

Sons  and Daughters

James A. Burke Baptized August 1, 1859 - died May 25, 1936, emigrated 1885, buried Yeadon PA

Thomas (my great grandfather) Baptized December 7, 1861, emigrated 1881, buried Clifton Heights PA

Mary Ellen born July 12, 1864; emigrated to US, Married John Alfred Stewart, January 15,1887, Kellyville, PA, two children; Mary Elva Stewart (1888-1976) and Elizabeth Florence Stewart (1891-1989). Mary Ellen  died in 1953.

Patrick Michael born September 15, 1866, died November 24, 1866

Martin born November 10, 1867, died September 10, 1868

Honour (Nora) born September 14, 1869 - emigrated to US, lived in Philadelphia (Nora Burke Dessalet) died ?

Anne - Born November 10, 1872, died February 18,  1872

John Joseph, Born July 18, 1874, died August 22, 1874.

I have Thomas Burke born in Kilcooly 1814, (married Julia Flaherty 1845 Annaghdown) Galway and his son Michael Burke born Annaghdown 1845.  Thomas and Julia's daughter Bridget married a boy William Riley Dooley from Mount Bellew.  I would begin by looking the parish churches.  I'm chasing the Dooley's, so it's interesting that you mentioned Clonbrock (which is where my gggrandmother, Mary Dooley b1833, brother Michael c1835 and father Edward Dooley b1795? (married Catherine O'Neil circa b1805- c d1845) are said to be from.  Clonbrock Estate was owned by landlord Esquire Dillon.  So anyone from Clonbrock was probably a servant on his estate.  Records can be found in the Dublin Library apparently where they have the full list of Clonbrock servants, gamekeepers, blacksmiths etc.  I hope this is of 'some' help.  I would be eternally if you could take some notes on the Dooley's if you come across them in your travels (if you have time of course).

I am sorry to say I only just now saw your posting. I am amazed at how much information you have about our family. I am the son of Elizabeth Roche whose grandmother was Mary (Maria) Burke.

I grew up in Springfield and Media and now live in San Diego. I'm curious how you know so much about my great grandmother's family. Do you have a family bible?

I was fortunate enough to have met with the pastor of the Catholic Church while I was in Caltra. He let us look through the records he had and we found several baptismal records for several of the Burke siblings including Martin. I don't have copied here in my office but I'll share them with you if I can get your e-mail address.
