Hello all. My Clonbur background is on my father's mother's mother's side, a Maguire from Cloughbrach Upper. In the past year I have found much on my Maguire/McGuire family.
I decided to untertake a project to expand the knowledge to the area, rather than just my own known roots. As you might know, the family tree in Clonbur area is quite complex and has tangled roots. Starting from the 1901 census, and at Cloughbrach Upper, I entered each individual into Ancestry.com and then, using my own data, that available on ancestry, and the civil records, went backwards and forwards in time. I did not expand fully into the present as the data would be overwhelming. The tree on Ancestry is 'Clonbur Families' and I can also send it as a .ged file to those who are interested. Last night I completed Cloughbrach Upper, and will next move on to the other Cloughbrachs. For each person in the 1901 census, I have attempted to discover their actual dates and places of birth, and maiden names. Often I have found marriages and deaths as well. Further work is needed in order to go farther back in history to ties surnames to common ancestors. Other works that is needed is to tie in UK records as well as those of countries other than the USA. I did not attempt much tracing outside of the Oughterard district but within Ireland to find marriages and deaths, but there is some records.
I have had particular difficulty with the inaccuracy of precise dates of birth on the census. They were more often incorrect than correct. People made themselves younger on the census than they actually were, sometimes by more than a decade. Name spellings are also difficult, such as Maguire/McGuire, Kearney/Carney, Mulroe/Mulrow, etc. All of these confounding factors may have made me make some mistakes. If you know of one I have made, please inform me.
Regards,
R.W. Keyes

R. W. Keyes:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
You are to be commended for all the great work on Clonbur. I will alert our HQ staff about your message.
I have spent eighteen years transcribing the 1901 census and you are correct that ages generally were understated sometimes by 10 years. The Old Age Pension Act was passed in 1908 and therefore an incentive was created to have the correct age in the 1911 census so you will find better age accuracy in that census.
Here is my site www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census I'm currently working on Co. Donegal.

Morning R.W
Thanks for getting in touch. My grandfather's family were from in and around Clonbur - the Lowrys and they are tangled lot!
I am not sure what the situation is with the .ged extension files but will find out. In the meantime would you be happy for me to create a news item about your work so far? I can add it to the Clonbur parish page and give directions to your ancestry 'Clonbut families'. You can email me at cdoyle@irelandxo.com and let me know what you think.
Best wishes

Hello R.W.,
My grandparents were Thomas and Bridget Joyce of Cloughbrack Upper. In 1901 my grandmother is listed as the head of household in #56 under her maiden name of Bridget Kerrigan. Her two younger siblings lived with her, and her mother Mary Kerrigan (a widow) was in #43 with the other children. By 1911 Bridget is now head of household in #53 as Bridget Joyce and her mother Mary Kerrigan is living in #44. Bridget's husband, Thomas Joyce, is not listed in the census. I know he traveled back and forth from Ireland to Pittsburgh a few times during those years so I assume he could have been overseas in 1911. I have much information about the Joyce and Kerrigan families such as birth dates and immigration information if that would be helpful to you. My mother is Margaret Joyce Hynes born in 1915. She is still alive at age 102 and living with me in the Boston area. All of her Cloughbrack connections are long gone. Her last sibling living in Bohaun died in 1995. I would be very interested in seeing your .ged file. My goal is to someday be able to trace the Kerrigan family further which is very tangled as you get into the mid 1800s. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mary H.

Dear R.W.:
As you can see, your hard work has brought about some interest. If you are still interested in sharing what you have found and all the hard work and effort that you have put into the "Clonbur Families", will you please get in contact? It would be a wonderful resource for the Clonbur parish page and would also assist you in finding more of your family.

First let me apologize for not getting back here sooner. I didn't know that anyone had replied.
Clare Doyle: I will email you as requested
Jane Halloran Ryan: I suppose you can mention it, but I'd like to add I am building on and working with my 2nd cousin once removed, Martin O'Halloran, whom many of you have probably heard of.
Mary Hermann: I found your grandmother in the 1901 census, but it curiously lists her as single. I can't find any marriage record for her in the civil collection, but that's not entirely unusual, I will try the church records. I would very much like to receive the data you have on Kerrigans, as my great-great grandmother was Mary Kerrigan (1852-1897), daughter of Patrick Kerrigan (1811-1891), and Mary who's maiden name and lifespan I do not know. Mary Kerrigan, my 2nd great grandmother, was married to Hugh Maguire, and were parents to Julia Maguire (1881-1963), who emigrated to Boston from where my extended family in the US is centered (Massachusetts facts: I was born in Boston, Grew up in Lenox, went to college in Cambridge and lived in Boston for over twenty years, and now live in Westfield. My parents live in Williamstown).
Roger McDonnell: 18 years! that's a long-term project! Thanks for all of your work.
To all, I will be in Ireland this September with my family, spending time in Dublin and Cork for ten days.

Dear R.W.:
Thanks for your reply and no worries not having replied sooner.
I'm delighted to hear that you will be in Ireland in September and if you find yourself in Galway/Clare, it would be great to try to meet.
You can email me at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.
Clare is no longer working with the Ireland Reaching Out project, but I will be happy to accept any information that you have at the above address.
Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Dear R.W., Thnaks for responding. Yes, my grandmother Bridget Kerrigan is still single in the 1901 census. I could not find a marriage in the civil records either. I estimate that the marriage took place around 1904 or early 1905 since their first child was born in late 1905. It would be great if you could find them in the church records. I have my line of Kerrigans back to my 2x great-grandparents, Matthias Kerrigan and Maria Murphy. I am unable to go back any further since there are multiple Kerrigan families with the names Matthias and Patrick in the mid-1800s. I can forward information that I have on my line if you would like. Nice to hear all of your Boston area connections. We relocated to the Hopedale, Ma in 1990 from Cleveland, Ohio. If you would like my information please contact me at paulcherrmann@verizon.net. Sincerely, Mary

Hi Mary,
I have one Matthias Kerrigan in the tree, as the father or Martin Kerrigan who married Sarah Laffey. I have run into the same issues with multiple people with the same names in the same general area, both in Joyce Country (my father's mother's family) and in Dunmanway (my mother's mother's side).
Hi Jane,
I am sorry to hear that Clare is not longer with Ireland XO.I don't think I'll be making it to Clare or Galway this trip. However, I am planning a new business venture which would benefit from a European branch and I have already identifid the Shannon Free Zone as the most suitable location.
Mary and Jane, I have both ent you invitations by email to the Clonbur Families tree on Ancestry.com.
To everyone: How far have people from the Clonbur area proceeded with genetic testing? I have had much done. I spent a lot of money, but for those of you who aren't in a rush, you can save money by waiting for a sale, which seems to happen 4-5 times a year at FamilyTreeDNA or Ancestry.I have tested with both of those services, while my parents have used 23andME. FamilyTreeDNA seems to be thoe most sophisticated, but each service has its niche.
Anyone else who wishes to be invited to the Clonbur Families tree on Ancestry.com, just post your email address and I'll send an invitation along.

Robert W. Keyes

Dear R.W., I finally posted the attached files of my family members above. I have Martin Kerrigan (d. 1994) as dying in Cleveland, but I believe your record is more accurate since the hospital was Lakewood Hospital. Also, I have been looking at your Ancestry tree and noticed that you have my great-grandmother, Mary Saunders Kerrigan's death listed as May of 1899. You noted a discrepancy in the record since that person was listed as a widow on the record. I know that my Mary Saunders Kerrigan didn't die until the 1920s in Glentrague since my mother (b. 1914) grew up knowing her grandmother. However, I was unable to find any death record for Mary Kerrigan in Ougtherard civil records in that time frame. I don't know who the Mary Saunders is that died in 1899.

Thank you for the information, Mary. Upon entering it into the tree in Ancestry.com, I noticed matches coming up in the family trees entered by Martin O'Halloran, with a few differences. He is very active in this activity! I also came across entries of yours in find-a-grave, and ancestry was able to fill in some birthday and husbands' info, as well as children.
Does your mother speak Irish?

Hello R.W., I have been in contact with Martin also. He was very helpful with my Mother's Joyce side from Kilbride. If you need more information about the U.S. born Kerrigans I have census records I can upload. These would be my mother's first cousins in PA, OH,and MI most of whom have passed away. Yes, Irish was my mother's first language but she has lost much of it since she immigrated at a young age. She does revert to Irish once in awhile. Sincerely, Mary

Wow. That is amazing that you can even make all of those connections. My mother always called Jack Mannion by his Irish name that you mentioned. My mother was known to everyone as "Maggie Brid (pronounced Breege) Baba". Mary and Jack spoke Irish most of the time but had to speak English when we visited. Thanks for sharing that.

Hi Mary, ancestry generates the relationship explanation automatically, so the only credit I can take is for entering in data and making connections. Once I connected the Ging family in, it was clear.
I have a question for you regarding your great-grandmother Ellen Joyce. Other family trees, of unknown reliability, have her dying in 1954 at age 103 in Pittsfield, Mass. Do you know if this is true, or even possible? I just moved from Pittsfield a few months ago and go back there often. I could do some research on her while there.
I continue to add people to the Clonbur families tree.
Regards,
Bob Keyes

My great-grandmother, Ellen Joyce (nee Joyce), never immigrated. My mother used to visit her in Kilbride as a child. She died there in 1932. As far as I know they had no one in Pittsfield. Four of Ellen's daughters immigrated and are buried in Pittsburgh. However, I do have a Pittsfield connection in my immediate family. My son-in-law's mother was raised there. Their name is Barrett. Also, if you want to add my dad's name to my mother's Ancestry information he was Joseph Hynes (1919-1998) from Knockbrack, Athenry, Galway.

Dear R. W,, After rethinking the 1899 death of Mary Kerrigan that you recorded on the Ancestry tree I believe it could possibly be my great-great grandmother named Maria (Murphy) Kerrigan. She was married to Mathias Kerrigan and had at least three children: my great-grandfather Patrick, Luke (Bapt. 10/28/1859), and John (Bapt. 10/21/1860). I couldn't find Patrick's baptismal record. Maria's husband, Mathias, died in 1892 so that could explain her being recorded as a widow. The Mary Kerrigan that was present at Maria's death could be either her daughter-in-law Mary (Saunders) Kerrigan or her granddaughter Mary Kerrigan Beas. Sincerely, Mary

Hi Mary, I removed the Pittsfield death record for Ellen Joyce. Interesting about the Barretts. I had a high school teacher by that name I wonder if there is a relation. I put your father's data in and found some conforming data. I was worried that your Mathias Kerrigan was the one involved in the Huddy murders of 1882, but thankfully, the family defails do not match. I have entered the death date for Mary Murphy Kerrigan as you suggested may be the proper one.

Hi R.W., I had also been worried a while back that Mathias Kerrigan of Huddy Murder fame was my great-great grandfather but as you noted the years don't match up . I bet he is a cousin of my relative though. I don't know of any of the Barretts that were teachers. Thanks for adding my dad's information. Sincerely, Mary

Hello again,
I just viewed the information for Joseph M. Hynes. His death was the alternate one listed of April 18, 2015. So you can delete the January date. Also the Rockford residence was from about 30 years ago so you could delete that. Also, I was wondering if you wanted to add John Mannion and Mary (Joyce) Mannion's daughter who was born in Bohaun. Her name is Mary Ann Mannion born in August , 1947. She now lives in Manchester, England. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Mary

My mom (Nora Duffy) was born and raised in Cloughbrack. Her parents were Patrick and Bridget (Kerrigan) Duffy. Patrick Duffy's parents were Michael and Honora (Coyne) Duffy. Bridget Kerrigan's parents were John and Katherine (Thornton) Kerrigan. I am looking for genealogical information on my family. My mom has some information, but some details have been lost for older generations. I will try to get her on this site to read through the information posted. Many of the names mentioned are familiar to me as they are relatives or family friends that I met as a child or often heard spoken of.
I would also like an invite to the Clonbur Families tree on Ancestry.com, if this is still available.
Thank you,
Shannon

My great grandmother (Nora Walsh) was born and raised in Cloughbrack. Her parents were John and Mary (Comer) Walsh. Nora emigrated to Boston and married a Thomas Shields and they had several children before she died at a young age. Upon her death, my grandmother (Katherine) and her brother Tommy were sent to Cloughbrack to live with Walsh relatives before they returned to Boston as teenagers. Katherine never returned to Ireland but my Uncle Tommy (really great uncle) returned often as he would lead travel groups to Ireland. During the time that they lived in Cloughbrack I was told that they lived with a Bachelor Uncle - Martin Walsh who was a tailor. If there are any folks on this thread that can help me in piecing some additional history together I would be grateful. - Kerry White

Dear Nova Girl,
You might be able to gather information if you join the Clonbur-Connemara Genealogy FB page. R.W. Keyes has a Clonbur Familes tree on Ancestry. If you request for him to give you access you should be able to find information about the Walsh family on there. I know that he is on the FB page I mentioned or you could leave a request here also. Good luck.

Hello Clonbur friends,
I'm excited to find this thread and would lilke to know if the Clonbur tree on Ancestry is just for people in the immediate Clonbur area or if it includes the whole parish?
I am descended from Lydens and Mulrowes (therefore potentially related to just about everyone in the area lol) and I have found some of their records in "Clonbur 1", but they definitely lived over to the West of Lough Mask.
Any hope for me?!

Hello All,
I have just finished entering in another townland, Ballard, in the 1901 census in the "Clonbur Families" tree. I have been able to trace some of them fowards and back, but others dead-ended. I made good progress with Herwood/Herward and Molloy. If you're interested in the Portland (Maine) Irish community, I may have added some content of use to you. I've traced some from Ballard to the present day in the USA.
As usual, if you don't have an invite to the tree on Ancestry, let me know your email address, or send me a message on Ancestry and I'll send you an invite. If I have overlooked any requests made in the past, please let me know and I'll try again.

Hello again R.W.,
I was looking at the family tree, and I noticed there is a discrepancy in my great-great-grandfather's genealogy. He was Mathias Kerrigan married to Maria Murphy. The children that I believe they had together were Patrick, John, Luke, and Martin(not sure about this one). There are two seperate Mathias Kerrigans who were married and having children in the 1850s and 1860s. The other Mathias Kerrigan is married to Biddy Kerrigan nee Kerrigan. The latter Mathias is the one who spent months in jail after the Huddy Murders of 1882 and eventually became the informer naming three other men as the murderers. As I am sure you know it is very difficult to sort out all of the Kerrigans in the village. Sincerely, Mary Herrmann
