Hi there. My daughter is compiling a family history and we are trying to trace back a line of Dooleys from the Castleffrench estate townland of Cornadrum in Killeroran. We can go one generation back from Maria Dooley (b. 1890, Cornadrum and married to Tim Naughton) of Gowla, but then we hit a wall.

Maria Dooley's parents were John Dooley (b. 1832ish Cornadrum) and Bridget Lohan (b. 1859ish Newbridge). We know John had an elder brother, (Thomas, b. Cornadrum - from a 1855 Tenament valuations document) and that he had six children; Margaret, Joseph, Maria, Bridget, Nora and Martin. Only Margaret (Boston) and Maria survive to produce children. The family believe also that John had been previously married and had produced a futher six children, but this is unconfirmed. We do know that he worked as a 'bone-setter'.

If anyone is in possession of any futher info or can give advice, we would delighted to hear from you.

  • John, my Lohans come from Lissavruggy, very near Newbridge in Ballygar parish. Ballygar records go back to 1804, so you might find the baptism of your Bridget Lohan and learn her parents' names.

  • Thanks Diane,

What is the best way to access Ballygar records? I'm sorry, I am bit new to this. I also heard that marriages are usually held at the wife's church, which may also be somewhere around Newbridge.

There does seem to be quite a lot of Lohans around this neck of the woods both of my great grandmothers on my mother's side are Lohans

    Cheers John

  • Thanks all,

We've made loads of progress on the Lohan side of things. My Mother's Grandmother; Bridget Lohan came from Newbridge, her father, Thomas came from Lisquell and married a Mary Hynes, his father Patrick also married a Hynes; Bridget and there may even be another generation Patrick Lohan senior.

The Lohans on my grandfather's side also go back a bit. He was Tim Naughton from around Castleblakeney and his mother was Elizabeth (Bissy) Lohan b 1866 from Trihill Killeroran. Her dad was Pat/Matthew Lohan (Loughan) b.1841 married to Anne Cheevers (b1838) and his father was possibly a Thomas Loughan (Caltra) who married a Judith Higgins.

So Anna has got back to her GrtGrtGrtGrtGreat Grandfather.

    Thanks for your help.
