Greetings from the U.S.  I am researching my Irish roots, one branch of which came from Knockash, Loughrea.  The journey-takers included my g-g-grandfather, Patrick Silk (b ~1828), and his siblings Ann Silk and John Silk.  Patrick can be found in the U.S. as early as 1865 in a coal-mining town in Pennsylvania called Mahanoy City, where he was a stone mason and filed a petition for naturalization.  Patrick married Mary Golden (also from unknown County in Ireland) probably in the U.S.  I can trace them to their deaths using U.S. records, but am struggling with the Irish end of things.  The only evidence that they came from Knockash was a classified ad that Patrick and Ann took out in search of their brother, John, in a publication called The Boston Pilot.  I do not know the names of their parents or when they emigrated from Ireland.  Despite my best efforts in searching Ancestry.com and other Irish sites, I have found no other information about this family in their Irish homes.

I am writing in hopes that someone may recognize the family names or suggest additional sources of information.

Many thanks.

  • Hi Ann Marie

There is a baptism record of Patrick Silk 1828 in Galway on www.rootsireland.ie/

Unfotunately it is now a subscription site

The record will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names; there is also an 1827 & 1829 record for Patrick Silk in Galway.

    There is a record fo Ann Silk also 1828 + - 10 years & 10 for John Silk 1828 + - 10 years

Do you have an approximate birth year for Mary Golden & Ann & John?

  • There are a few people with the Silk surname showing up on the Tithe records in Co. Galway, and just one of these is located in Kilteskill civil parish.

    Name : Thomas Silk
    Location : Island More
    Date : 1825

See : Silk, Kilteskill (Tithe Applotments, National Archives)

Island More is not listed as a townland in this parish, but could have been a local name for an area within it. Given that it's in the same small parish as Knockash townland (just 19 townlands) I'd say Thomas is likely related in some way to your Silk family.

Knockash townland is located to the west of the parish and on the border with Killeendeema civil parish. The townland is shown of the 1st Edition OSI maps here   (townland borders shown in red, civil parish borders in green). There are no Silk surnames listed for Knockash townland or the parish on the later Griffith Valuation (dated 1856 for this area)

In the 1830s Kilteskill civil parish was included in the Catholic parish of Killeenadeema, which is located immediatly south of the RC parish of Loughrea. Catholic Baptism and marriage records for this parish go back to 1836.

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for your response.  I have searched the IFHF website and obtained the birth record information for every Patrick Silk within +/- 10 years of 1830.  Not knowing his parents names is stumping me.  As well as the fact that there is no single set of parents who have children named Patrick, John and Ann (I searched on all of the Patricks' parents' names too to identify all of the children born to specific sets of parents).   I suppose that it is possible that the three siblings don't share the same mother and father, but that just makes it harder.

Mary Golden was born in March 1830, according to the 1900 U.S. Census.  I have not been able to locate any U.S. records on Ann or John Silk, hence I have no idea about their dates of birth.  However, because they are Patrick's siblings, I assume that they must be within a 20-year window.

Patrick Silk and Mary Golden had four children.  Two of them died young, and I don't know their names. Their two children who lived until adulthood were John Joseph Silk (born 1862 in New York) and William J Silk (born 1866 in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania).

    Again, thank you!

  • Hello and thank you!  There is a Thomas Silk (b. abt 1810 in Ireland) in the 1870 U.S. Census living in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  He was married to a Mary (b. abt 1810 in Ireland).  In 1870, their children in the household were Thomas (b 1844 Ireland), Nelly (b 1849 Ireland) and Daniel (b 1850 England).  This family is a candidate family for Patrick, Ann and John, who would have been the older children and already out on their own.

I will check the sources you mentioned!
