I'm looking for the forbears of Timothy McCarthy, born about 1805 and his wife, Julia O'Leary, born about the same time. They were married in Ardfert Parish in 1839, apparently a second marriage for both. She was married to Denis O'Leary and we don't know her maiden name. Nor do we know her place of birth. She was the sister (or sister-in-law) of Daniel O'Leary m. Catherine Mulquinn. Any advice on where to search would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information on their fore bearers as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.
For information on Church of Ireland registers check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf
You can on the Irish Times website that Catholic records for the area do not begin until c. 1818.
Perhaps it may be an idea to contact the Local Studies Department in Kerry Library for assistance and advice on where you can find more information. Here is a link to their contacts page:

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
