I have found the marriage record of my gr gr grandparents--David Hoare & Maria Brosnihan. The place of marriage is recorded as Dingle Chapel. I have asked on several other geneaology forums where this might be but no responses so I started doing some research. I found a picture which was labeled Dingle Chapel and in the description it indicates that it is the church in Kilmalkedar. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know where/what church Dingle Chapel would be referred to. Marriage took place in 1867.

  • Presumably that reference to 'Dingle Chapel' is from a civil marriage cert ?

That would refer to the Chapel in the town. It's shown on maps going back to at least 1837, and in the 1890s as St. Mary's. There still seems to be an RC church at the same location on Green Street.

see RC Chapel, Green St. Dingle  (c1890 OSI map)

p.s. if it's a civil marriage record, it should include the name of the Parish Priest which for Dingle in 1868 would have been Daniel O'Sullivan or maybe one of the curates Michael O'Sullivan, James Power or John Dillan. All based in the town of Dingle.

  • Thank you so much for this information. It was a civil marriage but the information I got online does not show the name of the person who performed the marriage, but your information is very helpful!  Thank you so much!

  • I saw the marriage on the Irish Genealogy website. The bride's address is transcribed as 'Clouncurragh', which I think is a spelling variation of Clooncurra which is a townland located just 6km east of the town of Dingle.

The date of 1867 and ref to Dingle Chapel could refer to the Church of Ireland. ST Mary's RC Church on Green St was completed in 1865. (150 th Celebration this year.) Prior to St Mary's the RC Church was on Chapel Lane off Goat St further up the town. The new church at that time MIGHT still have been referred to as the Chapel.

Kilmalkedar  Church was not in use by this time period and would not be referred to as the Dingle Chapel.
