I just learned that my 3 times Great Grandparents Patrick O'Connor and Joanna Keane O'Connor were tenants in the townland ot Lisroe, Barony of Clanmaurice, Union Listowel, Parish Duagh, family  and forename Oliver Fitzmaurice.  I am not sure what all of this means but I am certain it is important to finding more about my O'Connor family. I do know that in 1839 Oliver Fitzmaurice held Duagh townlands of Lisroe, as landlord. Does this mean my family worked on Oliver Fitzmaurice's land and if so how to find out what they did?  Were they farmers? How do I find out more? Any help is greatly appreciated. Diana

  • Diana,

I replied to your original thread on the subject of parish records.

Here I'll comment on land etc. As you say Oliver Fitzmaurice was the landlord for the townland of Lisroe and other parts of Duagh parish. Your ancestors would have been tenants. This meant that they had a tenant agreement and paid rent to Fitzmaurice. The agreement may have been short term or long - hard to say in the absense of original documentation. But it's wrong to say that they worked for their landlord. They were independent in the sense that any modern-day tenant is independent of the landlord. Your ancestors had a plot of about 23 acres. This was reasonably substantial at the time - not very big, not very small. And they were certainly farmers.

In your original post you said that your father came to USA in 1842. It puzzles me then that he is listed as a tenant at the time of Griffiths Valuation. It is possible that there were two tenants by the name of Patrick O'Connor in Lisroe.

I could not locate the Tithe records for Duagh parish.

In the 1852 Griffiths Valuation, Patrick is listed as Patrick Connor and he was leasing 23 acres from Oliver Fitzgerald. Patrick was also sub-letting one acre to a Maurice Connor.

To answer your question, Patrick was a farmer who leased land from Oliver Fitzgerald.

Go to www.askabout ireland.ie  to search the Griffiths. There are 11 Patrick Connor records in Duagh parish. Your Patrick was the seventh record. You can also use that site to get maps and also see the land today.

  • My original post was incorrect. My 3X great grandfather arrived in the U.S after 1852 and before 1860.  I have based this on the records I have found in the U.S. His daughter Ellen/Eleanor O'Connor was born about 1852 in Ireland. She married Patrick Hines in St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, Gowans, Balt., MD in 1871. The record stated her parents as Patrick O'Connor and Johannah Kane. I have not been able to find any proof that Johannah Kane O'Connor came to the states. She may have died in Ireland.
