Hi there,  I am looking for information on my ancesters from Lybes, Duagh, Co Kerry.  My great, great great, grandfather was Nicholas McElligott who is recorded to have lived in Lybes in the1850s (griffiths Valuation).  I have a record of my great great grandfather Patrick McElligott who married Johanna Halpin also from Duagh in 1860 approx.  They had 5 children one of them being Thomas McElligott my great grandfather who immigrated to the US in the 1890s.  He was born in Duagh in 1878.  He died at the age of 29 in New York and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, New York.  His son William (my grandfather) was brought home by his mother Ellen O Dea to her parents in Liscarroll, Co. Cork and was raised by them there and had no more contact with the McElligott side of his family from Duagh, Co Kerry.  Myself and my father Thomas McElligott are wondering if there are any McElligotts still living in Lybes Duagh who may be related to us.

  • Accrording to the 1911 Census a Mc Elligott family still lived in Lybes.

A 2002 article in the Kerryman mentions a Julia McElligott from Lybes, Duagh. A 2010 article also mentions Julia.

Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as you. I know I have family in Duagh, but have yet to connect with them. It would be so nice to have someone on the ground from Duagh on this site.  I've been tempted to make phone calls to the few phone numbers of people with family surnames I can find.

Have you contacted North Kerry Reaching Out? They have been trying to help me find family information. They are more locally based.

  • Thanks a mil for your reply.  I know that my greatgreat grandfather Patrick McElligott was alive in 1901 as he and his wife Johanna Halpin are recorded in the 1901 census, (He was 96   and she was 63).  Neither of them are recorded in the 1911 census. Thanks for the article re: Julia McElligott, she is a possible link.  Ill contact North Kerry Reaching Out.  Thanks again.

  • I'm probably the person who wrote those articles in the Kerryman.

Now, Julia McElligott  is not McElligott at all but  is married in Lybes to Gerard McElligott. This couple is not originally from Lybes but Gerard's mother was Margaret Relihan (RIP) from Lybes. Gerard and Julia moved to the old Relihan homestead in Lybes.

That is the McElligott/Lybes connection that you are looking at.

A good contact for you would be Gerard's sister Norma who is secretary in the local primary school Duagh NS

    duagh.ias@eircom.net   or 353 68 45366 Monday to Friday 9.30am to 12.30pm.

But before you do anything I think that is the wrong McElligott line for you.  Now, I might be wrong.

    .........

There was another McElligott family in Lybes. John McElligott (RIP) who was married to Hannie Heffernan. They had no family. Duagh is full of those McElligott relatives but none now living in Lybes.

Now this McElligott family line is huge. Lets call it McElligott2    Julia's McElligott's being McElligott1.

Now McElligott2 surnames in Duagh to look out for: 1. McElligott itself John Joe in Listowel (nephew), John Joe has about 12 sisters & brothers mostly in England but they return to Duagh 4/5 times a year.many, many contacts here.Home house is just opposite the school in Duagh. These nephews/nieces would be in their seventies.

2.Jim Daughton Coolanelig Duagh (nephew). 3. John Heaphy Foildarrig Duagh (nephew) good contact. 4.Eileen Galvin Knocknacrohy Duagh (niece) 5. Fr Pat Moore PP for parish records. 6.Tom O Connor Lyreacrompane (nephew). As I say the McElligott family was/is huge with many, many contacts.I will do some research for you. I will meet Jim Daughton and John Heaphy who I'm pretty sure are your cousins and I will chech things out.I will also check the 2011 census.       Keep in touch.             mallroad13

  • Hi there

I visited Duagh last weekend and met some wonderful, helpful people.  Does anyone know if there is more than one graveyard in Duagh???  I didnt find the grave of Patrick McElligott and his wife Johanna Halpin.  Patrick died on 30th Jan. 1904  from Lybes, Duagh.

    Thanks Doreen.
