I am seeking to make contact with present day members of the McCarthy family of Lacka West, Duagh. I believe Con McCarthy. born ca 1906 and buried at Duagh in Feb 1993 belonged to this family.

Hi...I'm in the US and my paternal grandma was Mary McCarthy b 1876. Family was fromn Lacca - father Timothy McC and mother Mary Nolan (one of 3 in the area in the late 1800s). Lacca/Lacka was very tiny and I've only found three McCarthy families there - John McC and wife Mary Cronin who had children in the 1850s and mid 60s but were not there on the 1901 census, my family beginning at least 1863 thru 1918, and Cornelius McC and wife Mary Nolan (another) who had many children and were still in Lacka on the 1911 census. All three families seemed to follow the tradional Irish naming convention with the first son named after the paternal grandfather and the second daughter after the paternal grandmother. Each family named the first son John and second daughter Catherine/Kate so may have been related. My only known family mamber who stayed in Ireland was a brother John who was still there in 1918 with 4 young sons when his wife died. Any other contacts with these families?

Luana,
I am Administrator of the McCarthy (Y-DNA) Surname Study. Duagh is not my home parish but I traced a McCarthy family to it when researching for a fellow countryman of yours. He ahd taken a National Geographic Y-DNA test, which I also interpreted for him. To read his story you need to find a copy of the Feb / Mar 2015 edition of National Geographic Traveler. I provided this support willingly and entirely free of charge, and while I was paving the way for his visit there (complete with cameraman etc.) was treated almost as one of the family. Once he had what he wanted though, not a word!
His descent was from Cornelius (1821 - 1903) and Mary née Nolan.
I have had no further cause to follow the fortunes of the Duagh McCarthys. Their paternal ancestry is not shared with any otrher members of our Study as recently as the second millenium, but then north Kerry McCarthys seem to have acquired the name through a variety of sources.
Kind regards = Nigel McCarthy

Thank you for your reply Nigel. I have seen the article - it popped up the first time I googled Lacca after finding it on a marriage certificate. Big surprise. I have been lucky tracing all my grandmother's family and find DNA a huge help. I do Ihave a number of very close 4th cousins with ancestors in the same general region but no common forenames. I have just requested joining the McCarthy group on FTDNA as a female with paper documentation but no male relative to test. Sometimes a match on one site has helped me identiy matches on another site.

All roads lead to Duagh. I've ended up in Scrahan, about 3 townlands away from Lacca.

Thank you Nigel. I did enjoy the article very much and its a shame the McCarthy you dealt with wasn't nicer. It was quite a shock to find it since Lacca is so tiny - 11 households and about 80 people in 1901 & 1911. Hopefully it brought you a bit of genealogy business. I sent Zena a pedigree and other info a few days ago.
