Hello, I am looking for my Great-Great Grandfather Jeremiah Daley (b. ~1855? Killarney?) and his extended family.

Wife: Margaret Murphy (b. ~1855, Ireland) (married in 1879, Christchurch, New Zealand)

Brother-in-laws: Cornelius Murphy and (Michael J. C. Murphy?)

Son: Jeremiah Bernard Daley (born 1886 in Canterbury, New Zealand)

Daughter-in-Law: Mary Janet Stenson an "Irish National".

The family story is that Jeremiah Daley (Senior) left his home (Killarney?) due to hardship, starvation and poverty. Most of his extended family died in the famine at some point. He came to New Zealand via New York or Boston, however, I haven't found any evidence to prove any of this! Jeremiah possibly came to New Zealand in 1877 on the 'Cardigan Castle'. Passenger lists include a Jeremiah A and Jeremiah P  both aged 20 from Co. Kerry, farm labourers. Also Cornelius and Michael Murphy from Kerry are on the same ship. He married his best friend's (Cornelius Murphy) sister, Margaret. He became a farmer in Tyco Flats, Timaru. It is evident from his marriage certificate that he was illiterate.

His son Jeremiah Bernard fought in WWI and suffered from shell shock. While recovering in England he met Mary Janet Stenson, an Irish National, they returned to Ireland together and were married in Kenmare Co. Kerry by Rev. P. J. Brennan 28.11.1917 (according to Jeremiah's military records). However, I can't find any record of this anywhere else. The Irish Civil Registration records report a Mary Janet Stenson marrying in Kenmare in 1918.

I would like to get a copy of their marriage certificate, how would I do this from New Zealand?

I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Daleys, Murphys or Stensons in County Kerry. From what I've heard and researched Kenmare and Killarney are the main locations. However, I don't have any information about where exactly any of these families are from. It's possible that Kenmare is where Mary's family were from not Jeremiah's... I'm not sure!

I am decended from Jeremiah Bernard's daughter Mary Patricia Daley, my Nana. We are all from Canterbury/Christchurch New Zealand.

NB. I don't know when it was decided that Daley be spelt as it is. (Jeremiah was illerate) so it's possible that the Daley's he is decended from in Ireland spell their name differently...

Thanks,

Claire :)

For the 1918 marriage record, you can write to the GRO for a copy of the record.

Go to www.groireland.ie fill out their form provide the year, registration district and volume and page number which should be on the index record. A copy costs around 4 euros and you can use a credit card.

You may also want to check out www.irishgenealogy.ie for Kerry church records.

  • Thank you! That's a lot of help. I will look into this.

I can confirm that Cornelius Murphy is definitely from Kenmare as it says so on his gavestone, which I have finally managed to locate in Timaru, NZ. So, if anyone knows any more about their relatives that remained in Kenmare, please message me.
