I had previously posted similar message over a year ago. I am looking for my GGGGrandfather's (Jeremiah/Dermid O'Connor) wife, Hanorah Malvey or Mealy. Cannot find marriage records in Kilgarvan,County Kerry. Believe she was born about 1804, location unknkown. She is buried in Holyoke, Mass. in family plot with son John H O'Connor and others (Jeremiah is not there, burial location unknown). Inscription on John H's stone states born in Kilgarvan, Co.Kerry. Inscription on Hanorah's stone is "Hanorah, wife of Jeremiah, died 86 yrs old (died in 1890).

Bob,
I could not locate their marriage record even though the records for the RC parish of Kilgarvan began in 1818; however, this record might be one of their siblings marrying each other:
Denis Malvey & Margaret Connor, Shandrum, 30 Oct 1821. Witnesses: Daniel Connor & Jeremiah Connor.
Even if you do find the marriage record, it probably will not have their father's names as the early records did not show that information.

Carolyn

Mary and Carolyn,
Thank you both for your assistance. Shandrum seems to be very close to Kilgarvan (a few miles to the south) so I suspect these children are part of who I am searching for. I believe John H was another son, born to Jeremiah and Honora/Hanorah 30 Oct 1833 or 1838 (my records vary). I hope to travel to the area either later this year or next.

Bob,
Just to clarify things....Shandrum is the town land they lived in which is in the RC parish of Kilgarvan, also the name of the civil parish. They were not from the town land of Kilgarvan which is in the LIsselton civil parish.

Carolyn,
Thank you for the clarification. Jeremiah and Honora//(Hanorah as it is spelled on her gravestone) had another son, John H O'Connor (My GG Grandfather, emigrated to America, died in Massachusetts). His headstone indicates he is from Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry. I assumed, based on the proximity of Shandrum to Kilgarvan, and with no other successful searches for the time period and area, that they (Timothy, Ellen and Daniel) are all of the same family as John H. Let me know if you think my assumptions are incorrect or inaccurate. I am trying to put together as much information as possible and I am planning a trip to Ireland within the next year. Also I can find little in the way of grave markers in Kilgarvan, and none in Shandrum, to give me hints. One in the Kilgarvan Old Graveyard just marked "Connor" is about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I believe most of the records for anyone farther back than Jeremiah and Hanorah's generation might be lost to time. Let me know if you think hiring a local genealogist would likely turn up more than my (and your) efforts have in going further back. Bob

Bob,
I found John's baptism record on irishgenealogy.ie, here is the information:
John Connor, 1 Nov 1830
Sandrum, RC parish Kilgarvan
Jeremiah Connor
Honora Maley
Sponsor: Gobnet Sughurue
So he is a bit older than what you thought. You might check out the Tithe Applotment books and Griffith's Valuation records for Shandrum as that looks to be the town land your relations are from. Generally, only the weathly could afford a grave marker, so I doubt that avenue will produce results. I don't think hiring a local genealogist is the best way to spend your money....spend it on the travels to Shandrum! As I mentioned before, even if you find their marriage record, the parent's names probably won't be there...maybe a witness who might be a sibling, but there is no way to know that for certain. Finally, regarding it stating that John was from Kilgarvan on his headstone, that doesn't mean the town land....headstones I the US often mention a more general area such as a parish, county, etc......

Bob,
I took a look at the Griffith's (1852) myself, and while I did not find a Jeremiah Connor, I did find a Daniel Connor as a tenant in Shandrum, Kilgarvan...landlord was Mary Sullivan. There is no way to be certain, but given the Irish naming convention of naming the first born son after the father's father, Daniel could be Jeremiah's father. He could also be his brother or some other relation. In order for Daniel to be his father though, he would have been born around 1780 give or take a few years, and by 1852, he would have been "elderly" for that time period, so one cannot be certain he still held a tenancy at that age. One never knows!

Just noticed that one of the baptism sponsors for Daniel Connor was Mary Sullivan....wonder if that's the landlord above?!
