My gr gr grandfather was James Shea and he had a brother Bartholomew Shea.  they were born in the 1830/40 range. their father was also Bartholomew.  Bartholomew married Ellen Moran who had siblings Denis, Bridget, Mary, Catherine and John.  they all immigrated to Glamorgan, Wales and then to New Hqven CT.  I would love to know where in Kerry they came from and learn whether James and Bartholomew had siblings.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime, did you know that Catholic records from Co. Kerry are available free of charge online at:

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

If there are any Church records pertaining to the family you will be able to find them here.

In addition you could also check the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. These do not give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. I did a search for Bartholomew Shea in Griffith?s Valuation (1848-64). There were quite a few results however they help you to narrow it down to 8 parishes:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=shea&firstname=bartholomew&offset=0&countyname=KERRY&parishname=&parishname&unionname=&baronyname=&totalrows=46&PlaceID=0&wildcard=

The earlier records called The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) there was a Bartholemew Shea recorded in Killorglin parish:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=shea&firstname=bartholemew&county=Kerry&parish=&townland=&search=Search

    I hope this is helpful.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello, thank you for your response.  I did "reply" on facebook but that isn't really the right place.  It is just that I am never logged in here and always have to go through the hastle of getting a new password.

I am very happy to see a way to search the Tithes!  Griffiths I have searched, but my most direct ancestors were in Wales by 1851 or 2, I believe.  It is possible that the fathers (my 3rd great grandfather) was still in ireland, but I am enough uncertain about his name to discourage reading much into the search, especially when I find a whole hord of people with the same name.  Which brings me to question number 1 - I find two, as I recall, Bartholomew Sheas in the tithes but ?15 or 20 in Griffiths - obviously they could just have owned that much land, but my family doesn't seem to have had much money so I am skeptical.

I did find a Denis Moran in Dingle but when I go to irishgenealogy.ie to search I find the earliest records are 1860s - my family was long gone by then (Wales and onto CT).  On fb you said that earlier records were available in the National Library of Ireland - is there any way a "mere mortal" such as myself, living in the US, can search these at no cost?

I use irishgenealogy extensively, by the way and, when it works,it is fantastic.  But I do not get anything like consistent results for this side of the family (Shea, Moran, Grady, Connell)

    Many thanks for this site.

    Sue
