I am trying fo find information about my grandmother's family in Listowel, or surrounding areas. My grandmother, Johanna Sullivan O'Connor was the daughter of Eugene and Johanna Sullivan of LIstowel. She was born in approximately 1875, and came to American in 1888.
This is what information I have so far: Eugene and Johanna (maiden name Aherne) were married in 1871. I found an address that said they lived at 25 The Square in LIstowel. They had 8 children that I know of; Johanna (my grandmother), Julia, Catherine, Thomas, Patrick, Mary, James and Timothy. I found the 1901 census for LIstowel, and it listed my great-grandparents and their sons, but not the daughters, who I believe were sent to live in the US, while the boys stayed in Ireland. They were farmers. Eugene was 55 in 1901 and Johanna was 50. I can't find any information on their deaths, or what became of their sons. I know that my grandmother's sister Catherine who they called Kate lived in Pittsburgh when she came over. My grandmother lived in upstate NY.
I would appreciate any info you may have. Thanks!

Liz:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Your grandmother was born November 29, 1871. Here is the civil record (5th record on the page).

I looked at the 1901 census for Listowel and the record for house 25 The Square appears to be a different family. The wife was shown as Mary.

Liz,
This looks to be your family in 1901. They were living in the townland of Finuge:

Eugene died 15.2.1902 at Finuge, at which time Johanna was still alive.
This might be Johanna in the 1911 census, in which she is a widow and records that she had 14 children of which 7 were still alive.

Is this perhaps their son James in 1911:

That James had married Hannah Connor around 1907 though I can’t locate the marriage.
Your ancestor Johanna was baptised in Listowel on 29.11.1871 at which time the family townland was Billeragh. If you search the church records on this site you will find it, and may find her siblings:

Hi Liz, the only James Ahern I can find in Billeragh, in the right time frame was married to Catherine Mahony.
He had a son James born 1859 an a daughter Margaret.
It would be worth checking Ahern/e marriages after 1870 to see if you can pick up more children there.
Do let us know what you come up with as we may be able to help you build on that.

Hello Liz,
I also have a Eugene Sullivan in my tree but I do not see any connection to your family. My Eugene was born 1 Jan 1868 in Listowel, one of at least 15 children of Timothy Sullivan and Ellen Hedderman. My records show Eugene married a Nellie McCarthy in 1901 in NYC. Eugene died in 1920 in NY according to my notes. Sullivan is such a common name it makes research difficult. Good luck.
