My ancestor was Jeremiah McCarty who came to the United States in 1850. He was a widower with a 3 yr. old daughter Katherine. He married a widow - Mary Footman White on April 30, 1850 in Springfield,Massechusetts whom he had met on the ship coming over. He was born about 1815. I can find no evidence of where he came from although speculation is County Cork. His brother Johnny (b.1825) and sisters Ellen (b. 1824), Hannah (b. 1827), and Ann (b.1836) also emigrated to the USA about the same time. Jeremiah's father Charles (b. 1779), and his mother Mary Johanna (b.1790) also appeared on the 1860 US census. It appears that Charles and Mary Johanna were married about 1818 in Ireland. I cannot find evidence of any of them on the ships coming in to Boston or New York.
My wife and I are coming to County Cork in June, 2014 and we would dearly love to find some evidence of where they came from. Jeremiah was a farmer. I will be having my DNA tested as well if that will give me any idea where my ancestors came from.

Barry:
You may want to look at www.irishgenealogy.ie There are a lot of Cork church records on the site. It is also possible that the surname was McCarthy at that time.

Roger,
Thank you for the suggestion. I've checked this site before and am aware that the name could have been McCarthy. My problem is that we have no information except what a nun had written down about the family. From what I can find on the census in the USA, only one sister could read and write. This probably only added to the problem of no information.
