I am looking for information about my great great grandfather, Patrick Grady. I have a record of him marrying a Margaret McCarthy in 1839 in Killarney, Kerry. I have not been able to find a birth or death record for him, or who his parents were. His children came to the US, and his son Michael Grady is my Great grandfather. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you very much. I have found this information, and am able to follow the family forward to the present day, but I can find nothing about Patrick Grady before his marriage. No birth or baptismal record. This is my roadblock.

HI, Patnvic
Unfortunately, records prior to what is available either have been lost or not transcribed to digital search. See :https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ireland_Record_Loss
I have found from my own parish (Dingle) some records (1827 - 1837) that were not transcribed. If you know the Church of baptism or marriage the last resort is to contact the current Pastor and ask permission to personally review the records. Most of these are in fragile condition and permission (if given) is to certified researchers and at the choice of the Pastor either RC or COI. There are a number of optional sources: National Library of Ireland, General Registry Office etc, but these require a personal visit.
The list of available records can be found at:https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Hi Pat, I have sometimes found more information, townland names or additional children etc by going through the microfilms of the original records here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0675 The transcribed records do not always contain all the information available. The fact that only Killarney is named can imply that the family lived in the town of Killarney or that the priest or transcriber did not record the townland name. If you had a townland name this would be very helpful.
Have you got Death Certs for each of the children who went to the States, sometimes they give additional information. Do the friends, neighbours and asscociates of your family members in the States give you any additional information? Are there baptismal sponsore, marriage witnesses etc who show up more than once? Do any of the Census records for any of the children's families contain records of cousins resident in the households? I was able to find a family member using this method as the cousin was much easier to trace than my family member. Are there other Grady families on nearby Census pages? Could a descendant of another branch of the family have adidional information that you are unaware of? Did any family member return to Ireland for a visit even in the 1940s or 50s? Passport applications can sometimes open up new lines of inquiry. Did a family member in the States belong to a Killarney Association? These are some of the records that have been helpful to me in the past.
These records show Grady's with land holdings abt 1830 http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jspThere are 11 Patrick Grady's in Kerry registered as tenants c1852 in Griffith's Valuation, if your Patrick was still alive he could be one of them. If he or Mary survived beyond 1864 there would be a Civil Registration of death. Or there might be a burial record here http://www.kerrylaburials.ie/en/index.aspx Given that there are 291 people with the name Grady in Kerry in 1901, only 55 families, the name had not died out. I suspect that it would not be impossible to find a connection to at least one of those families though it would be time consuming.
However, focusing back on your American family may give you as yet unknown leads.
Best of luck

thank you, Martine!
You gave me some very good advice and places to search!
Unfortunately , here in the US I am the last of the line, the elders are all gone now, and like most people, I did not think to ask.
I have found some cousins thru DNa and they don't even know as much as I do.
I have death certificates found here in the US for Michael and his wife. They had 21 children, about 13 survived, and I have been able to trace them with birth and death certificates. Cannot find a death certificate here in the US for Patrick, so am assuming he died back in Ireland. So it is back to those old records, and more searching. You gave me some great clues, it is very much appreciated!

Hello - I am also descended from this Patrick Grady and Margaret McCarthy. (Michael Grady/Anne Gilligan to Lenore Grady). Pat - I am in the same place - the children's death certificates that I have located don't really add anything but the parents' names. I am currently working with DNA as well- and have good hypothesis for Margaret McCarthy's parents.
I will be in Killarney next summer, not specifically to do research -but I would be happy to go to the church *with a proper appt.
