Searching for the parish in Kerry where my great-great-grandparents originated - John McCarthy born about 1800 and Mary Brennan born about 1808.  Their children emmigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada about 1850.  They are Jeremiah b. 1828; Michael b. 1836; Daniel b. 1845 and Catherine b. 1852.    John also emmigrated about 1860 and died there in 1873.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Do you have any additional information concerning these individuals which may assist others in furthering your research?

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Some resources/sites which may be of assistance to you are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The Library & Archives of Canada - http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

    Irish Genealogy: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Bert, I have been searching the online births and marriages for Kerry but I have not come across any John Mc C and Mary Brennan yet. Where did you find what you have posted already? Maybe this will help me. I had hoped to find at least Catherine's birth record as the records improve around that time but no luck yet.

    Please let me know

  • Martine,

Elizabeth replying for Bert - I am the family genealogist (Bert's spouse).

The birthdates for the children of John McCarthy came from Canada Census and burial records (all died in Montreal).  They are based on age at the time of census/burial and so are approximate.

The reason for searching in county Kerry is the marriage records for Jeremiah (Montreal 1852) and Michael (Montreal 1860)  state  John and Mary Brennan being from county Kerry.  The marriage record for Daniel (Montreal 1870) states John and Mary Brennan being "of this parish" - Notre Dame de Montreal.  Catherine never married and died in Montreal 1893.

Have not as yet found passage records for the children or for John and Mary Brennan.  However, the 1901 Canada Census shows Michael immigrated 1850 and Daniel 1860.  Presume John and Mary Brennan immigrated between 1860 and 1870.

I have searched the on-line Kerry Church (Catholic) records and did not find a marriage record for John & Mary or births for their children.

I am really at the proverbial "brick wall".

Any information/suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

  • Dear Elizabeth, after a morning online I have been unable to come up with anything so far. Have you got copies of applications for citizenship for any of them? These sometimes give more details. Also who were their neighbours in the census that you found? Sometimes these can give us a lead to where a faimily were from. Do you have any Memorial Cards in the family? Even if they are not for Brennan or Mc Carthy they could give us a clue.Did any of the family go in to specific trades where many were from a particular part of Kerry? Did the 2 who married marry Kerry women as I have often been able to find people more easily through their maternal line?

If you can find any more details, I will be able to help you more. The difficulty we have right now is that John Mc C is such a common name in Kerry.

If it takes you a while to explore these options then do repost what you find so that it moves up the board.

I do hope that you don't give up as I would really like to help you more.
