Hello,

I have been trying to find information on my great grandfather John O'Leary who was born in either January or June 1844 in County Kerry. I have found several John O'Leary with birth records that match his birthdate(s) on several websites online in County Kerry. I do not have any other information except the few locations on the birth records in Tralee, Castleisland, Killarney, and Ballycarnahan, Caherdaniel.

John was about 17 when he left for the US and arrived in New York in August 1860. He then settled in Philadelphia Pa when he lived all his life. He had another relative living with his family in Philadelphia named Jeremiah O'Leary. I think they were either brothers or cousins.

The O'Leary family were Roman Catholic and I would like to find out how to locate church birth records where I could try and match his birthdate. I will be visiting Ireland in June 2013 and would like to visit where my great grandfather lived. I would appreciate any help or information that someone could provide. Thank you very much.

  • Hi Maureen

I have been and had a quick look - there are 14 Baptism's for John Lynch in 1844 - so not very easy I know - Link =

So its not going to be easy to determine which one is him - unless you have a copy of his marriage certificate with jis parents names , the other thing they used to do was name their children after family members

you could also check out www.familysearch.org

    Good Luck

  • Hi Maureen

Sorry I meant O'Leary not quite as many as Lynch so have a look at the site anyway, and see if his brothers name

comes up with the same parents names

  • Hello Maureen,

Thank you so much for helping.  I have had alot of luck tracing my great grandfather and his children once he went to Phila but the one thing I can't find is their marriage certificate. I talked to the people at the church he went to in Phila and they had no record of the marriage either so last week I ordered the film from the Family search site to check the record. The online site had no record but maybe I will find something.

I have kept the Irish naming pattern in mind while researching the Griffiths Valuation and other records and that is why I am looking in certain areas. His wife, my great grandmother was Julia Harrigan or Horgan born in County Kerry about 1841 and came to Phila in 1861. A few of her sisters followed her during the 1870's. She is proving to be elusive too.

Thank you for the links to other sites. I would appreciate any other suggestions you might have. I only have until June 19 when I leave for Ireland so I am hoping to find a clue before then. I will be in Kerry for about 3 days so maybe I can look through records there.

Last July I found cousins in Ardrahan, Galway  through this site and a group of 15 of me and my Phila cousins will be attending the Ardrahan Gathering June 21-23. I can't wait to be in Ireland again.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

  • Hi again

I just had a thought - did he & or she leave a will when they died, I have traced back to the late 1700 in county Kerry found connections in my 2 x great grandfather stayed in Castlegregory, his siblings in Sacramento & Massachusetts another possibly in Connecticut (not found Yet!)  and my 3 x great grandparents in Annascaul Kerry, the reason I was able to find them was the one in Sacramento died intestate (no will)  but muy aunty (in NZ) found to sheets of paper about an estate in Sacramento dated 1920), but didnt know anything about it - the great thing was she kept it - and nearly a hundred years later it yeilded a copy of a marriage certificate and two wrtten depositions - 1 from Kerry - the other from Massachusetts (the probates I found were in the Center for History in Sacramento)

anyway check with the archives where ever they lived to see if they have anything there - a long shot but worth looking at also if the sisters married - their marriage records may show up

Enjoy your trip - I hope to go next year - I have made contact with family
