Can you clarify whether Thomas and Julia were married in Ireland or Australia. I looked in the civil marriage indexes for Ireland and could not locate a Thomas Lanigan marriage to a Julia.

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has records for the RC parish of Freshford back to 1790. The Tullaroan records start in 1843.

Roots is a pay site to view transcriptions of church records.

Any other information? Parents, siblings?

Hello Roger - My information from the England and Wales census of 1881 is that they were married in the UK at Tynemouth in December 1868 - Their children were :-     Amy;Ellen;Thomas;Martin aand Michael. 1n 1881 Amy was 10 yrs and Michael was a baby.

I believe that Julia's maiden name was Cuddily (From previous searches but there are variations such as Cuddahy etc.) - I tend to think that Cuddily is correct as there was a Patrick Cuddily boarding with them at the time so this person could have been her brother but that's speculation only.

Tynemouth is in the North East of England where I lived for a few years and this area is where Thomas ( The son)  is to be found - I believe that he in my Grandfather so this is why I am interested.

If all this information is correct,I have a little bit more I can tell you  -  I have an original Marriage certificate for Thomas (the son) which shows he is a widower and married Ada Ellis on September 16th 1912 when he was 36 years old - Not much more I can tell you really but I would be happy to help in any way I can - Best regards - Dave

I looked on Roots Ireland but could not find any baptismal records for Thomas and Julia in the time period you mentioned.

I also think that Julia's surname was Cuddihy. Go to this site http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

and you will see that there was no one with the name Cuddily in the mid-19th century while Cuddihy was very prevalent in Co. Kilkenny.

I looked at the 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tullaroan and Freshford civil parishes. There were three Lanigan records in Freshford. These may all pertain to the same person or there could have been 2 or 3 Michael's There were a number of Cuddihy records in Tullaroan. If you can find Julia's death record maybe it will show the parents names and you can match the fathers name back to the Griffiths. See www.askaboutireland.ie for the Griffiths.
