I am researching the family of my ancestor Thomas Cullen, died Victoria, Australia in April 1884, aged 74 years (birth abt 1810?). His death certificate gives his place of birth as Kilkenny, and his parents as Edward Cullen (farmer) and Catherine Lannigan.
I have checked on RootsIreland, and found the following Catholic baptisms in Diocese of Ossory, Freshford, Kilkenny:
Bridget (Biddy) Cullenan 01 Feb 1818 F: Edward Cullenan M: Catherine Lanigan Address: Trenchardstown
Patrick Cullen 12 Jun 1820 F: Edward Cullen M: Catherine Lanigan Address: Trenchardstown
Catherine Cullen 27 Feb 1825 F: Edward Cullen M: Catherine Lanigan Address: Trenchardstown
However, I have been unable to find a birth/baptism record for Thomas Cullen, nor a marriage record for his parents. I am wondering if anyone has any further suggestions or information for me re these records. I am also interested in finding out a little about Trenchardstown.
Thomas Cullen was transported to Australia as a convict - convicted in Kilkenny of "Riot and Assault" on 22 Oct 1835, he was sentenced to 7 years. His age is given as 22 yrs (birth abt 1813?). He arrived in Australia aboard the Waterloo in Sept 1836. I am wondering whether there might be any Irish court records or newspaper records which might give further information about his conviction.
Thank you in anticpation of any assistance.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Trenchardstown is in Tullaroan civil parish a little bit to the southwest from Freshford civil parish. The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tullaroan parish only shows a Michael Cullen Sr. and Jr. in Ballybeagh townland. The Griffiths for Freshford civil parish shows three listings for James Cullenan Esq. around the town. Likely this was one person with three properties. Not sure how he is connected. See links below.

Like you, I was unable to find Thomas' baptismal record or the marriage record. Here is the link to the parish register for Freshford http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0985 Tullaroan RC records do not begin until 1843.
I can't tell you a lot about Trenchardstown other than it is 429 acres in size, rural and 11 kilometers southwest from Freshford town.

Hello Marilyn
If these are your Cullens in Ballybeagh that would make them neighbors of my Dillons that lived there. Trenchardstown townland is east of Ballybeagh townland, and Lisnalea townland is inbetween them (I've been researching in this area for a while now). Curious to know if they are! Thanks, Laura
