My Griffith family came from this area. They were tenant farmers. Lewis and Elizabeth gave birth to the following:
Lewis b. 1790 who married Elizabeth Budss in 1816
Elizabeth Jane b 1810
James B. 1811
Jane
Mary
I am looking for any info on this group.

Hi there,
It looks like Knockalane could be in the Roman Catholic diocese of Muckalee. If so, then there are church records available from 1801 (baptismal records) and 1809 (marriage records). These are available in the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 5026, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0926200 item 1-5. If you have any difficulty, you could also try writing to the parish priest in the areaw.
You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com and here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat also has lots of other useful documents you could try checking.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

Knockalane and Ballahsallah (as well as Coolcullen) are in the Mothell
Union as it was part of the Church of Ireland. I do have some records
from a photocopy sections of the parish register.
I have also checked the Griffith Valuations but the timing is bad.
Most of my family left in the early 1820's and 30's. I have attached a
file I recieved that show the families that were there around
1817-1818. I do not have a source for this other than the person I
recieved it from. I use this all the time. It lists the families in
descending birth order. My family is the widow Griffith (Elizabeth). By
the time of this record Lewis the father was dead. The oldest son -
also named Lewis - took over as head of the household. He was a
brother to my James b. 1811.
My mystery - when did Lewis Griffith born about 1770 (Lewis his first child was born in 1790) die? Where is he buried? He does not show up in tithe documents so my theory is that he worked elsewhere. Perhaps he was in the military or police.
Any help would be appreciated. -
Hi there,
If they were Church of Ireland then you are fortunate as the Church of Ireland were very good at recording burials unlike their Roman Catholic counterparts. The information rarely consists of more than the name, age, and townland. C of I parish register for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however, many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
You can add a copy of the registers to your message if you wish. Does it contain much other information?
Kind regards,

The photocopies I have a source material were of mixed quality. Some were very clear while others were very hard to read. Also there were missing pages. The headings are:
Parents Names
Parents Names
When Baptized
When Born
Child’s Christian Names
Christian
Surname
Abode
Trade or Profession
Minister
For burials it is:
NO.
NAME
ABODE
WHEN BURIED
AGE
MINISTER

lists a Lewis Griffith as a policeman in Gowran Barony in 1824. He would have been 54 but it may be you man.
Incidentally I have a Lewis Griffith in my tree (died in the late 1600s), and there's fair bit about Lewis Griffiths in the 1600s and 1700s if you do a Google search for "Lewis Griffith" (with the apostrophes). It's yet another Welsh name in Ireland, but it's not so common so as to rule out a link over the generations.
I'm going to be sorting the info tonight/tomorrow and will be back here soon to post the results.

Genealogy.com also gives this research into the Griffith family:
I have Sir Morris Griffith to whom a considerable estate was granted in the county of Leitrim in Ireland in 1612.
His nephew, Edward Griffith, was living in 1649 (presumably also in Ireland). They were both descended from a scion (ie offshoot) of the family of Griffith of Penrhyn in North Wales for whom I have the pedigree from Griffith's Pedigrees of Anglesey and Caernarvon, but I cannot find the connection - can anyone help here, please?
Now Edward Griffith had a son Thomas who was living 1696 and he had a 2nd son: the Very Rev. Richard Griffith (1643-1717), Rector of Coleraine and Dean of Ross who married Jane Leslie and had a son Edward Griffith (who married Abigail, daughter of Sir William Handcock and Elizabeth Coddington, and they had 4 children) and a daughter Jane who married the Rev. Charles Leslie (17/7/1650-13/4/1722) of Glaslough, co. Monaghan, Chancellor of the Cathedral of Connor 1686, who was ancestor of the Leslie Baronets of Glaslough.
Does anyone else have any more information on the spouses of the above mentioned Griffiths, including which family Jane Leslie belongs to, please?
Many thanks,
Caspar---

Sorry for my delay in reponding.Thank you for all the wonderful material. I have seen some of it before but I would much rather have it twice than not at all.
My Lewis Griffith was dead by 1817. I have stimated his birth as roughly 1790 as his first born - also named Lewis was born in 1790. He married Elizabeth Budds in 1816. She was born in 1795. The police and the army were professions that mainly protestants could work in. There was the Royla Irish Constabulary. They were stationed around the south of Ireland. Here are some names:

We still have Griffith relatives in and around the area of Coolcullen in Kilkenny.
I have also established a DNA link with a group that came from Ridge in Co. Carlow. It is not far from my branch.
-
Lewis may have been a member of the Carlow Militia. My throry is that based on the sheer numbers of Griffith connections to Carlow that they came from places such as Ridge - Fenagh - Dunleakney. It only fits that he may have been in this organization as he does not appear to have been a land leasor.

I am a decendant of your Lewis and Elizabeth Budds and can give you info on their siblings and decendants. Most went to Ontario but Lewis's (1790-1859) 1st born (Frances) came to Australia along with her sister. Too many dates and children to list here tonight but shall return to give you the information at a later date. My email is geoffrey.collier@bigpond.com.au

Yes I am familiar with this Lewis. We have corresponded before. There were two of Lewis Griffith the father of Lewis Griffith b. 1790 who went to Australia. Richard Griffith settled in Bacchus Marsh near Melbourne. I have material on his line. I have much less on his sister Elizabeth who also emmigrated.
Where did Lewis b. 1790 children settle?
I am the most familiar with the Griffith branches that came to Canada. Where did Lewis b. 1790 end up?
-
Out of 10 children, 4 came to Australia IE Frances, Ann & Elizabeth to Melnourne and Richard to Bacchus Marsh. Sam went to New Zealand. Elizabeth born 1828 in Johnswell married Edwin William Butts in 1863 and she died in Ascotvale (a suburb of Melbourne) in 1911.
Frances married in Kilkenny Ireland to William Redmond and I am having trouble locating his parents if anybody can help.
