Hi, I'm hoping to get some help with a little reverse genealogy from Staten Island New York, I'm interested in finding family of my 2nd great uncle William Delaney born in Scaroon, Clonaslee in 1860 and moved to the states with his brother John/James in 1880 approx, He lived at 210 Ardsley Street ,Staten Island New York. As far as i can make out from census records up until 1940 the family resided at this address, He was married to a lady called Sarah and had quite a large family Margaret 1895 ,Mary 1897, Michael 1899, Sarah 1901,Rose 1902,William jnr 1904 John 1906,Anna 1908 and Christine 1914, I seem to have drawn a blank trying to trace any whereabouts of this family after 1940, Rose according to census records was a proprietor of a tea room i would imagine in staten island but not certain in the 1930s,John/James it seems never married but also lived at the same address, enclosed is a photo whom i believe is William and John/James Delaney, Hopefully someone can help me to find this long lost side of our family, Looking forward to hearing from all with any suggestions to further my research,

  • Hi Martin

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.

If you go to rootsireland.ie (it is a subscription site, but you can now take out a 24 hour subscription). There is a Delany family listed there including a William baptised in 1860 and a James in 1853 to a father Michael and a mother Margaret Deegan. I believe this is your William as his sister Margaret's birth cert records the townland as Scarroon. Other siblings included: Michael, Anne and Thomas. Michael (Mick) and Margaret married on 10th Feb 1850.

There is also an entry here for a Michael on Griffith's Valuation

Hello Martin and Clare:  I am looking for Delaney's from Queens County.  My 2nd Great grandmother was Ann  (sometimes listed as Marie on her childrens baptismal records) from Queens County.  She was born in Ireland between 1835-1842 and immigrated to the US before 1856.  She married a man named William Maloy. I have two photos of her.  I've been trying to connect to these Delaney's without any success.  I know it's a long-shot, but I wonder if this is the same line.  William and Ann were living in Pennsylvania probably from the 1860's forward.  Do either of you have any information that would lead you to believe Ann could be part of this line?  There is also a "Phillip Delaney and Bridget" listed as sponsers on one of Ann's childrens baptismal reocords in 1864 Pennsylvania.

I will be traveling to Ireland next month, and it would really be exciting if I could visit Ann's birthplace.  Also, if either of you happen to know, I was wondering a few things about the baptismal records from PA. (1) Is is possible that someone would be named a sponsor/godparent in abstentia? (2) would an older sibiling (maybe 18) be named a godparent for a younger sibling? (3)  would a husband and wife be named godparents for the same child?  I wonder because all of the godparents are listed by first and last name, except for one record that lists the godparents as Phillip Delaney and Bridget -- so I wondered if they might be married.  Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

  • Hi

If you don't receive a reply from Martin you can give me a shout at cdoyle@irelandxo.com and if you are happy, I can passed along your email address to him.

In relation to godparents, I suppose anything is possible and I can see every reason why an older sibling might be added as a godparent - particularly where large families were concerned. I have also heard of adding godparents abstentia?

    Best wishes
