Hello!!! Hope everyone is well and stays that way! I'm new to this website, but I think I'll enjoy it. I'm looking for any information that people may have about my ancestors from this County/parish what have you. Last name is Corcoran. My 3rd Great Grandfather was John Corcoran 1836-1893 born in (June 1836 ) and died here in the states in Buffalo, NY. I don't have the name of either of his parents, but I do have a census from April 2 ,1911 that he resided there. Also, I have his wife's name as Maggie unsure of maiden name and they married in 1870. Henry and Matthew L. If I find more information that may help anyone identify this part of the family I will definitely update it!!
Much love, Kim

  • Hi Kim . . .

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . .

    Using " Roots " (paid serch engine) . . .

    When I had a look at " Timogue "  . . . I'm presumimg that this is a Townsland of a larger Town/ Village . . . possibly Portlaoise / Rosenallis / Stradbally

    Timogue (Tigh Maodhóg) , Barony of Stradbally, Co. Laois . . . . . . as found on . . . https://www.townlands.ie/search/?q=Timogue

    MAP . . . (see below)

    ____________________________________________________________________

    So . . . where would your John Corcoran . . . have had his Birth registered . . . ????

    When I search Ancestry . . . (see below) . . . the one which tops the list . . . is in Mountmellick. Laois . . . .

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0717 . . . . this is the Parish Register ...R,C, . . . here . . . you might find the Parents names . . . IF . . . you find HIM  .. . .

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________-

    So . . when I search " Roots " . . . they throw up  . . 6 /J.Corcorans . . . for Laoise . . . period 1831 - 1841 . . .

    ONE only for the 1836 date . . . ( see below -  Corcoran (Roots) . . . AUGUST . . . !! . . .

    _________________________________________________________________________________

You indicate in your query . . . JUNE

    _____________________________________________________________________

    So . .  .the TWO below . . . point to the same person  . . . only one born 1836 . . . Ancestry // Roots

    as registered in. . . .  MOUNTMELLICK

    _________________________________________________________________________

    Next I serched for a MARRIAGE . . . . on Roots . . . 1870 . . . Spouse . . Margaret . .  .NOTHING (for Laoise) . . .

    then I searched ALL Ireland . .. . and surprise surprise . . . a Marriage . . . appeared (see below ) for WATERFORD county . . . a long way . . in those years from Laoise.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    So . . here's a question . . . . Could your John Corcoran . . . be from Co.Waterford.  . . . . Stradbally, Co,Waterford . . . ???? ( map below)

    by coinncidence . . . there is also a Stradbally .Co.Laoise . . .

    I dont have a definite answer . . .

    __________________________________________________________

    When I search " Ancestry " for a Corcoran . . emigrating to the U.S. . . after 1870 . . .  a MRS J. Corcoran shows up ( see below) in 1885 . .

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

    So . . next I llooked for HENRY . . . searched Roots . . . in Waterford Co . //   Laoise . . . NOTHING

    BUT . . . when I search Ancestry . . . a HENRY . . crops up . . . back up in Co. Laoise ( see below)

    Search . . MATHEW . . .(see below)

    _____________________________________________________________________

    So there you have it . . . Best I could do . . .

I hope you can nuggets in there somewhere . . . . personally it leaves me confused . . .

    Was it Laoise .  . . or   Waterford . . . or Both . . .

  • Hello, Kim,

I'm new to this website, so I wasn't able to respond to you earlier.  I am the descendent of Corcorans from County Laois.  My ancestors were from the townland of Crissard in County Laois (formerly County Queens), which is a short distance north/northwest of Wolfhill and just northeast of Swan.  My great grandfather, William Corcoran (circa 1828 -1904), is the Corcoran who emigrated to the U.S. from which I am descended.  He had five siblings, one of whom, Margaret Corcoran Knowles, also emigrated to the U.S. around the same time as William (1850/1851).  I haven't been able to determine if they came over together, or if their other siblings also emigrated to the U.S.

Margaret Corcoran married Dennis Knowles, also of Crissard, in 1847.  They already had two children when they emigrated.  Unfortunately, both children died in New York City within six months of their arrival there.  Other siblings of William and Margaret included Francis Corcoran, Mary Corcoran, Honora Corcoran and Patrick Corcoran, born between 1824 and 1846.  Their parents were James Corcoran and Margaret Conlon, who were married in Crissard in February 1823.

As with your John Corcoran, my great-grandfather and great aunt both also ended up in upstate New York, in the town of Beekmantown, Clinton County, about five miles north of Plattsburgh.  My grandfather, the son of William Corcoran, was also a John Corcoran.  My brother is John Corcoran, too.  Grandfather John was born in Beekmantown in 1877 and lived there his entire life, until he died in 1953.

It doesn't appear that our Corcorans are from the same immediate family, but I suppose it's possible they were more distantly related.  There were a number of Corcorans throughout County Laois during the 1800s, and the first half of the19th century in particular.

If you learn of more relatives from County Laois, please share with me and I'll let you know if I've come across their names, or if by a stroke of good fortune, they are in both of our family trees.

  • Hello, Kim.  Have you tried getting a copy of John Corcoran's Death Certificate?  Most municipalities in New York State were issuing death certificates by the year that John died (1893).  I would think that Buffalo would have been in compliance with the law about issuing death certificates earlier than most New York State municipalities, being a large city with resources and staff (I assume John died in the city of Buffalo?).  Death Certificates ask for the decedant's parents' names.  If the informant/witness was a family member, he/she may very well have provided John's parents' names.  Personally, I've had good luck with Death Certificates advancing my tree.

I don't understand the following in your post...  "but I do have a census from April 2 ,1911 that he resided there."  Is "he" John?  Didn't he die in 1893?  And what census are you referring to?  There was no U.S. Census or New York State Census in 1911.
