  • Hi Brigid,I joined the Ireland xo.com website today having seen your request for information posted in 2013 with regard to Dawsons /O'Deas/Clearys of Ballylanders.I do have information about the first 2 surnames but you have solved a puzzle for me with regard to a Clearys connection.Considering that it is 7 years since you sought such information, maybe you eventually received it and have long moved on,in your ancestry research. As you may know,by now,the Dawson you referred to,came from a long line of related Dawsons based in the Ballylanders/Galbally and Anglesborough district. The Dawson in the Dawson/O'Dea link was from Spittle,Ballylanders area.If I can be of any further help, feel welcome to contact me.John

  • Patrick Dawson, aged 74, died in Cullane on June 16th, 1881.  The death was reported by Ellen Dawson (relationship not recorded).  In 1884 the former Dawson house was occupied by John Hoare according to Valuation Office revision book.  This Patrick would have been born around 1807 so would probably have been the father of the John born in 1835.

Im delighted to hear from you . I gave up on the cleary connection, it had me stumped and still does, Dawson was the maiden name of my grandmothers mother (Bridget Walsh Bruff Kilmallock my granny on my father's side) I'm stuck at Kate o dawson once she married O'Dea ...I found relations of odea on Facebook. Delighted I solved something for u .. cleary was listed in 1901 census as granddaughter but was later listed as a lodger in 1911. I'm getting the bug again to go hunting .

  • Hi Brigid/Tim,My wife Kathleen's maiden name is Dawson.Just over 3 years ago both herself and her siblings asked me to research their ancestry,as I have been tracing my own for many years.Since then we have been on many amazing ancestral 'journeys'.With regard to the Dawsons, firstly,I've traced back as far as records allow and with the help of my wife's DNA Test results,we have made amazing progress overall.Rather than post, here,a long-winded account,I'll try and summarise our discoveries- The vast majority of Dawsons,in the Ballylanders,Galbally and Anglesborough,in our ancestors time,were/are all related to each other from earlier generational links,so it is very possible that any Dawsons living in those areas today may be completely unaware of this.'Our' Dawsons lived in the above referred to general area since,at least the 1600s,if not earlier. They were not related to a prominent gentry family of the same surname, who came to the area as planters/settlers under a British Government scheme in the 1700s.Through the generations all 'our' Dawson families kept close contact with each other and would be witnesses/sponsors at each other's life events. With regard to the Dawson Family of Cullane north,as far as I can estimate, their nearest relatives were the Dawsons at Spittle,Ballylanders Overall from less than a handful of Dawsons who originally settled in Galbally, over the generations the Dawsons mushroomed out to encompass the areas of Ballylanders and Anglesborough. Not only that but emigration to the north-eastern USA States also featured strongly for the younger members. For the Ballylanders area,Kathleen's DNA Results are showing links to,among others, the O'Dea,Walsh,Kelly, Gallahue,Cleary families. In fact,by pure coincidence I had been in contact with one of my wife's Ancestry DNA Cousins nearly 3 weeks ago, whose ancestors include Clearys of Ballylanders !!! I have tried to find the relevant Cleary/Dawson Marriage but without success but I was thinking if we could find Mary Cleary's (age 12 in 1911) assumed marriage record then at least we'll have her father's name to research from.I'm estimating that Mary could have married between 1919-1924 initially.Like with most families of the time,in the case of the Dawsons, they are extremely difficult to trace back because every family tended to use the very same first names so if you were John/Mary Dawson it was very possible,if not the norm !!!,that you could have, even 3 1st Cousins, who were all John/Mary Dawson !!!! Usually the further back you go the less personal information you'll get,so its so easy to end up researching the 'wrong' John/Mary Dawson. One final point,in this post, because of the growing Dawson cousins, over the generations,it became a practice to use a term to differentiate the families. In the case of my wife Kathleen's direct ancestors, they were known as the Glavin/Dawsons.That term is still used in the Ballylanders/ Gallbally/Anglesborough area today. With regard to the 1901 John Dawson of Cullane north,I estimate that he could well be a 1st Cousin of John Dawson,Spittle,Ballylanders, who married a Mary Glavin of Ballingarry, Glenbrohane in 1857.This marriage started the Glavin/Dawson term. The ancient Dawson ancestral graveyard is in Ballingarry near Glenbrohane, north of Ballylanders.I did my best to keep this post short !!!! ha,ha Best wishes John
