I would like to know if anyone knows of any Leanes still living  in this area who may be related to my gg-Grand parents Morgan & Johanna Leane (nee Sheehan) who lived in Ballyduff in the 1850,s. Johanna,s parents were Timothy & Bridget Sheehan (nee Roche or Roach) I don,t know who Morgan,s parents were. The Leane family (with seven children) sailed to Port Phillip Victoria Australia in 1853 where they farmed until Morgan died  in 1888. Hope to hear from someone Brian Lane.

  • Hi Brian
Were you in touch with me previously?  Are you based in NZ?
If you have done any DNA testing, you might like to run a comparison with GedMatch kit T076826 managed by me but belonging to a 2nd cousin some Lane ancestry from the Ballylanders area.
    Regards

  • Hi Tim yes were in touch before but I never got anywhere with my gg- grand parents Morgan & Johanna L(e)ane ( nee Sheehan) all I know is they had a Farm in Ballyduff (early 1840,s) & I have got the dates of two of his children,s Baptism,s. I know who Johanna,s parents were but I don,t know who Morgan,s were. Tell me what I could learn by a DNA test as I don,t understand them. Regards Brian Lane.

  • Hi Brian - Well DNA is a bit of a lucky dip because you only get connections with those of your distant cousins that have also tested but that Kit (T076826) has Lane connections, although from nearby Ballybrien rather thant Ballyduff.  There were lots of Lanes and Keanes in that area and the connection between the families is very hard to determine due to the lack of records.  On account of the poor state of the Ballylanders records, I would certainly give it try to see if it turns up anything.
    Best wishes - Tim

  • Thanks Tim, An uncle of mine is sure Morgan Lane was born in Ballybrien (1812) but as you say it would be a bit of a lucky dip to do a dna test plus with the exchange rate the way it is it would be an expensive exercise Regards Brian Lane.
