Like many Australians I have numerous ancestors from Ireland. My paternal grandmother’s family were the Houlihan’s from Fedamore Limerick. William Houlihan, a native of Fedamore arrived in Australia in 1865 with his cousin Mary Droney also from Fedamore. William’s younger sister Ellen was already ‘living in the colony’ and sponsored their fare. William had married just 3 months before he immigrated, but his wife Alice nee Dooley, remained in Ireland for 7 years before joining her husband in Australia [I will save her for a further post as her origins are a mystery too]
I have located William’s baptism in 1838 and that of his siblings in the Fedamore Catholic parish registers. His parents were Patrick Houlihan and Margaret C/Kavanagh. This information is also reflected in his shipping records although he gives his age as being 2 years younger.
Mary Droney gives her age as 25 and her parents as Patrick and Mary Droney both dead. However at the time of her marriage a year later she gives her age as 21 and her parents are recorded as Patrick Droney and Ellen Houlihan. From this information I calculate her birth to be between 1840 and 1845 but have been unable to find a baptism for her or any siblings with these parents.
I have also been unable to locate a marriage for either Patrick Houlihan and Margaret Cavanagh or Patrick Droney and Ellen/Mary Houlihan, nor a confirmed baptism for the siblings Patrick and Ellen Houlahan. The 1851 Griffiths valuation records a Patrick Houlihan at Cloghadoolarty, along with 3 Droney men, James, Thomas and Patrick. I have found a marriage for a Patrick Droney to a Catherine Ryan in 1827 at Ballybricken, however there is no daughter Mary amongst their children baptised and the baptisms for this couple end in 1841.
As I feel I have exhausted the published records available I am now hoping to maybe make contact with others researching these surnames in the Fedamore area or perhaps someone who has knowledge of any unpublished parish records that might hold further information. I realize that not all parish records have survived intact but live in hope of finding out more about my Houlihans. Houlihan can be spelt in a variety of ways, including at least one spelling starting with a Wh.
Thanks to anyone who has read all the way through. If you would like to read more about the above families and others, I have a family history website I have been building for almost 20 years.

Hi Col,
Thank you for doing these look ups. I do appreciate the time you took to do this. Unfortunately I am sorry to say I already have this information as mentioned in my post and also in the links I included. I have a sub to Rootsireland plus Ancestry and Find My Past. I also searched through the parish registered a page at a time when they first came online at the National Library of Ireland website before the indexes were available. I really think I have covered all of the records available online or in Australia at this time. I'm still hoping to connect with others who are researching these families or descendants still in Ireland. Thank you again for your generosity and kindness. Best of luck with your own research.
Kind Regards, Jenny [Brisbane Australia]

hello Jenny, I am also in Brisbane (Boonah actually) read your email just now and thought maybe we could help each other. Don't have easy access to my records just now, but my gr gr grandfather was from Fedamore, and his sister Bridget married a Maurice Houlihan and emigrated to Troy New York. Your dates seem to match..their surname was Clancy. If you think I can help give me a week or so, and I will get searching at home through my information. Regards, Carollyn

Hi Jenny
Yes looks like you've covered all available options except perhaps contacting the Houlihans in the irish phone book in Limerick (there are no Droneys).
We volunteers are not permitted to give contact details of living people on the site but if you look at www.118.ie/ (Irish phone book called 11850) you'll find 10 Houlihans in Limerick; we have had some success with people writing to those in Ireland with the surname they're seeking so you never know your luck

Thanks Col. I might try writing if all else fails. I've done that couple of times in the past with success before the internet made contacting people so much easier. Thanks for your help.

Hi Carollyn, Thanks for your reply. Although I dont have a Maurice in the identified family so far, I would still be interested in anything further that you have. The children I have for Patrick Houlihan and Margaret C/Kavanagh so far are Patrick 1827, Maria 1829, Ellen 1832, Thomas 1834, William 1838, Michael 1843. Ellen and William [my Great x 2 grandfather] came to Australia in the 1860s. I have no further information on parents Patrick and Margaret. Thanks.
