John and Johanna/Catherine (McAuliffe) DANAHER lived in the area of Feenagh-Kilmeedy in the first half of the 1800s. We know of two children: Elizabeth (b. 1825, and Owen (b. 1837)  A relative visited St, Ita's and found "Eugenius Danaher" (Latin for Owen, she was told by the priest, although I've since been told Owen and Eugene are two different names in Latin) had been baptised there, possibly in May of 1837. She said she also was shown a placque somewhere in the church with the names John and Johanna (possibly Catherine) Danaher, and was told those were the parents of Elizabeth and Owen. It has been a number of years since her visit, and some of my "facts" are a bit shaky. In 1849, Owen and his sister Elizabeth, (possibly with parents) emigrated to London, where they remained for 15 years before emigrating to America.
If I can make a trip there, can anyone tell me if I would need to go to Dublin to find church records from that period, or are they still at St. Ita's Church?
Thank you very much for reading this!

  • Hi Susan,

Sorry for the delay in replying to you. We are still looking into this for you, but as yet we are unsure of an answer for you. There doesn't seem to be anything in Feenagh-Kilmeedy to match what you have outlined. Especially around the area of the plaque in the church, we plan to shorthly check with another nearby similiarly named parish - Kileedy - which would have historical connections with Kilmeedy to see if anything there can help point you/us in the right direction.

    Kind Regards

  • Thank you very much for all your efforts! I will try to clarify my information with my aunt. I thought she was very certain of her findings, but she was speaking without her notes, and with the passage of time, details may have become muddled - especially with me!

    Thanks again, and best wishes!
