My Great Great Grandmother Catherine McGrath came to Australia around 1862 aged approximately 20 years.  Both her marriage certificate and death certificate list her parents as Jeremiah McGrath and Honora Finn (with slight spelling variations) and her birthplace as Limerick.  The Limerick Regional Archives claim that Jeremiah and Honora married in Kilbehenny parish on 9th March 1837 and the witnesses were Edmond Finn and John Lewis.  Jeremiah is actually referred to as Darby in the registers as both these names are synonomous.  The Archives found in the Kilbehenny Church Records that the issue from this marriage were;

05/06/1840 - Johanna - Godparents John Shaughnessy and Mary Tobin

14/09/1841 - Catherine - Godparents John Shaughnessy and Bridget Walsh

    /06/1844 - Johanna - Godparents David Tobin and Catherine Finn

20/06/1847 - John - Godparents Daniel Hayes and Catherine Cleary

The townland address given for this family was Carrigeen.

Does anyone have a connection to this family or know what became of Jeremiah and Honora?

  • Hi Liz

    There are 11 death/burial records of Jeremiah McGrath in Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/

    I did not limit the search with years or age. Perhaps you could narrow down the options by entering these. I've also assumed he died in Limerick.

  • Hello Liz and Col.

    I am from the Kilbehenny area. In 2012 a group of  us volunteers recorded all the headstones in Kilbehenny Old Graveyard for

    I looked for Finn there at the time as my father claimed that was where our Finns came from. To no avail, but last week when Ellen Lewis was identifying the old family plot for us I asked her and she said that there was  Finns living above them one time.

    I will ask further.

    The church records for Kilbehenny are held in the Tipperary Family Heritage center

    http://www.tfhr.org/

    It is a non-profit in the  Tipperary community center that helps families to trace their roots.
