How would I go about locating my grandfather Martin Kennedy's birth certificate? He was born in 1875 in the town of Cross. I am trying to obtain dual citizenship (U.S. and Ireland) and I need his birth certificate to accomplish this. Any help is much appreciated.

If you know the date and location you should be able to get a birth certificate (or christening cert. if birth not available) for your grandfather from General Records Office in Roscommon and/or via this link:

Hi Jane,
Do you have his date of birth, do you know his parents names.

Jane:
Kilcommon civil parish (Erris barony) falls within the Belmullet registration district. I found a civil birth index record for a Martin Kennedy in 1875. I don't know if you need a birth certificate or a copy of the record to complete your application for Irish citizenship.
If you go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx Hit the link in the middle of the page for a birth certificate in English. You may get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel. The form should come up. Fill out the form and provide the info from the index record (year of birth, registration district and the volume and page number (14 and 62). A copy costs around 4 euros but a certificate will cost more. Let me know if you have questions.
