I just joined Killeedy Parish, as my ancestors are from the nearby village town on Ashford in County Limerick (just south and east of Killeedy).  I am a descendant of the Hanley Family that has occupied the home since before my Great Grandmother Mary Hanley left Ireland for Chicago in 1883 at age 18.  I have been to Ireland 8 times and am the only American-born heir to the Hanleys that has been in the home (attempted to attach picture below).

Would enjoy connecting with others of Killeedy Parish, especially any others who are descendants of the Ashford Hanleys

Thank you

  • Hello Jim, my name is Jennifer from the parish of Killeedy in Co.Limerick. I have been forwarded your message by Jane Halloran Ryan and am on the team working with Ireland Reaching Out. I note that your family name was Hanley from Ashford and whilst I live in Tournafulla - no longer in the same parish but on the same stretch of road, I will be happy to investigate with locals who may be able to help with some details. There is no cost involved as Ireland XO is a voluntary non-profit charity set up to help to re-unite the people connected with our parish worldwide.

I hope to come back to you later, meantime let me know if you come across any further information yourself. Best Wishes

    Jennifer

  • Hello Jim, I wonder how you have managed your family tree since you were first in touch? So many records are being updated almost daily and I suspect that you have many, however I have tried to get information and access to the house since your message but so many families have moved on.

I have a lot of 'bits and pieces' of family history of the Daltons and Hanleys although it does not all look to the Ashford area and I will be happy to continue with this info but would be interested in anything that you have since found which might help to seperate the many different families

Perhaps you might e-mail me jenniemac2000@gmail.com

  • Hello Jim

My name is Paul Hanley and I don't think you can imagine my astonishment when I saw the picture of the house as it is where my DAd was born! Checking my records Mary, your ggmother, was the younger sister of my ggfather John Hanley. That makes us third cousins! I have a fair bit of Hanley history and would love to find out about Mary and the family in America.

Hope to hear from you soon

  • Hi there. I live in Australia. My Riedy/Reidy family came from Killeedy. Four boys and a girl, all orphans, came to NSW in 1855 after an older brother a few years earlier.

I have many, many DNA matches to Hanley on Ancestry. My user name there is chrissy2712.

Any Gedmatch kit numbers I can play around with?

    Regards, Chrissy

  • Hi Chrissy

I must say it's great getting such a quick response; I only joined yesterday!

I live in the UK but my Dad was born and raised in Ashford/Killeedy.

I don't know if you have been to Killeedy but  your name is certainly still common there and I remember it clearly from holiday visits to the 'homeplace.'

I've done quite a bit of research  on the Hanleys and got back to the 1840s but there are no Reidys in the tree I have.  Howver a Hanley ggUncle of mid did head to Australia in the mid 1860s. Perhaps this explains the DNA link?

Hope this helps and if \i find anything of interest for you I'll let you know.

    All the best

  • My great-gradfather Michael O'Hearn's nephew Michael O'Hearn/Ahern married Johanna/Jennie Hanley (1884-1954) in Chicago on 21 June 1916. Her parents were Thomas Hanley (born 1855 in NY-1902 Chicago) and Jane/Jennie Gowley (born Ireland May 1855-1915). Thomas and Jane had seven children who lived to adulthood. Johanna and Michael O'Hearn had one child who died as an infant. They are buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Chicago. Since they are so collateral I haven't researched them beyond that point.

The Aherns/O'Hearns were from Monagay or Killeedy parish and emigrated in the 1860s. They both married women from the Newcastle West area. It seems that a large number of people from there settled in Chicago. Maybe there i a connection.

  • Hello Chrissy,

You have introduced a new surname into the latest discussion around Kilkeedy, namely Ahern(e) who I have connections with.  A great uncle of mine was Stephen Moore (1867-1906).  He was born in Carrig and was married in St Alphonous Limerick to Margaret T Ahern. He died in Manhattan, New York USA and Margaret passed away in 1933 in Lynbrook Nassau, New York.  Margaret's parents were William Aherne (1840-1879) and Margaret Flannery (?-? m. 16 Feb 1858 in Patrickswell).  The Moore males migrated either to New York or Boston whereas the Moore girls migrated to Brisbane, AU.  I have not researched the Ahern(e) connection further.  However, an Edward Ahern turned up as witness (godparent?) in the baptism of Margaret.  A Catherine Aherne was bridesmaid to my great grand father (James Moore + Mary Daly m 18/2/1855 in Lurriga).     My records suggest that the Ahernes were neighbours of the Moores. John Ahern rented in West Carrig and Thomas Ahern rented in East Carrig.  I had not picked up on the O'Hearn alternative spelling.  I cannot see a direct link with my Ahern(e)s and Michael Ahern your great grandfather.  Monagay is somewhere near Newcastle West which looks like it is the opposite side of the parish from Carrig..

    regards

  • I don't see any Ahern/O'Hearn connections there. The O'Hern/O'Heron/etc. variations are a US invention.

My ggrandfather Michael served in the New York Brigade in the Civil War after immigrating in 1863, was wounded and lost his left arm above the elbow. He and a brother Patrick subsequently moved to Chicago and in 1870 lived with a marriad sister Margaret Ahern Flynn )(Mrs. Wm). Michael worked as a railway switchman in Chicago. He married Ellen Millane, daughter of Daniel and Johanna Cregan of Killeedy, in Chicago in 1876. Limerick researchers found that info for me in the 1990s.

  • FOR PAUL HANLEY AND OTHERS:

Very glad to get Paul's message of Feb 22.    Yes, we are cousins and the great house in the picture is the one my GGrandmother left in 1883 to move to the south side of Chicago.   According to my geneology study and your input, John Hanley is your GGrandfather and Michael Hanley your Grandfather.  John's descendents kept the Hanley home in the picture.  When I was there in 2013 it was occupied by Paddy and Maureen Hanley, whom I guess were in the 80s at the time.   I don't know if they are still with us, or who the occupants of the house are currently.  Certainly hope still in the family, so I can visit there very soon.  My planned trip in 2020 had to be cancelled, and I hope COVID clears out so I can get there this year.  I live in the north suburbs of Chicago now (Northbrook IL).  In November of last year my sister Colleen and I visited the gravesite of Mary Hanley Kennedy, at rest in 1938 in Mt Olivet Cemetery on the south side of Chicago.   I attempted to attach the picture.

Would love to hear from you again, and perhaps swap e-mail addresses.               Jim Hynan

  • Hello,

I have a bit to contribute in regard to Ahern/O'Hearne, etc. around Kileedy, although admittedly not much. My husband's great-great-grandparents were James Cussen of Newcastle West and Johanna Scanlon of Kileedy. This couple had several children, one of whom, Ellen/Elenora, was mentioned in Johanna's St. Louis, Missouri obituary in 1913 as "the late Mrs. Elenora O'Hearn." No residence for Ellen was provided in that item. Ellen apparently never emigrated to the US, at least never joined up with her mother and siblings who had (some of whom ended up in Chicago). I have presumed that she stayed in Ireland (or emigrated somewhere else on the planet), as did her father and two of her brothers, because I cannot locate her in the US ever, although I have not been able to find her in Ireland, either, after her birth/baptism in December 1845 in Kileedy. I have tried to be creative in global searches with the spellings of O'Hearn in all forms mentioned in previous comments but have come up empty.

  • Hi Jeanne, I have Foley from Limerick and possibly Kerry. My Riedy/Reidy family was from Killeedy. Patrick Riedy married Ellen Foley who maybe was the daughter of Thomas Foley and Mary Sullivan in Co Kerry. Anything there for you?

  • Hi, Chrissy,

I really don't know where my maiden surname came from, as my earliest immigrant into the US came through Canada about 1830, and I cannot determine from where in Ireland. He was Michael Foley, b abt 1800, who settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, and died in 1868, buried in the Poor Section of the cemetery. Why don't you email me off this parish/county board at jeanneedwyer@gmail.com to discuss my OTHER Foley line that may have come from Kerry?

  • Hi, Jeanne,

If that 1913 obit gave her name as O'Hearn and not Ahern, my guess is she had lived in the USA. The O'Hearn name does not exist in Ireland. My husband used to tease me that the Dublin Ireland phone book showed Lund but not O'Hearn! My great-aunts born in Chicago always said ,"We are not Aherns; we are O'Hearns." And they were school teachers!

  • Paul, Chrissy, and Scanlanavia:    James Hanley moved from Ashford to Australia in 1877 and married Mary Kiely there.  They had 17 children, 3 of the sons died in WWI.   My mother used to correspond with James' grandson John Hanley, who lived in Clontarf at the time (1970s or 80s).

Thanks for the info on Paddy and Maurenn Hanley of Ashford, Scanlanavia.   I am still fairly ignorant of this website, and don't know who you are

FOR PAUL HANLEY AND OTHERS (including perhaps Chrissy and Jennie Jean):

PAUL, I have attached (I think) the .jpg photo of the gravesite of your grandfather Michael (dec'd 1960) and G-Grandfather James (dec'd 1907).   It is good to know that Maureen Hanley still resides in the Hanley home in Ashford, may her Paddy rest in peace.  Your G-G Aunt Mary Hanley emigrated to Chicago at age 18 in 1883.   She married John Kennedy (from Ballingarry) in 1887.   They had 5 children, the second oldest of whom was Michael J Kennedy (born 1891).  Michael's father John and little brother John Jr died within 6 months of each other around the turn of the centruty.   Michael J headed the electricians union in Chicago (IBEW Local 134) for a number of years.   His oldest child was Rosemary Kennedy, born 1916.  She married James Hynan in 1945, and I am the 3rd of their 4 children.

If you have any knowledge of our G-G-Grandfather Michael Hanely of County Limerick, please share.   My "tree" stops at my G-Grandmother Mary Hanley.   I have been inside the Ashford home twice, have you?

Would like to know more about your lineage, especially your Dad's name, and where you live in the UK.
