Greetings from New Zealand

I am trying to trace the home of my husband's family. We have good reason to believe that the John MOLON(E)Y baptized in Manister 18 April 1830 is the brother of his gg grandfather James Francis MOLONY who married in Australia in 1860. We have no proof on James' life prior to his marriage but we do believe that he was a twin baptized on 3 Jan 1832 in Limerick City.

However I am anxious to find the Manister connection and seek to find their parents David MOLONY and Alice HOGAN who lived in the district in 1830. I have not been able to find the mariage of this couple. The sponsors of John's baptism were Timothy SCANLON and Margaret FLYNN

Any help will be REALLY appreciated,

kind regards

  • Hi Heather

I'm not sure which sources you have tried but www.rootsireland.ie/ does not have a marriage for David & Alice but does have 3 (or 4?) baptism records of children born to them

Confusingly there is a John  1830 in Manister (same as you have) and another John & a Patrick both 1834 but neither is from Manister or Limerick City Parish; they are both from St Michaels RC parish & both 16th March so twins for sure.

    Name:Patrick MoloneyDate of Birth:16-Mar-1834
    Date of Baptism:1-Jan-0Address:
    Parish/District:ST. MICHAEL'SGender:UnknownCountyCo. Limerick
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:David MoloneyMother:Alice Hogan

With a little creative searching I found this:

     Name:James MoloneyDate of Birth:03-Jan-1832
    Date of Baptism:1-Jan-0Address:
    Parish/District:ST. MICHAEL'SGender:UnknownCountyCo. Limerick
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:David MoloneyMother:Elizabeth Hogan

Only difference is Elizabeth instead of Alice; couldn't find this marriage either however.

  • Thanks for your time, the James and his twin Ellen are almost certainly ours, with James being our direct descendant. I was thinking if the Manister birth was also his family it might be there that they married. It could be that the first John bap 1830 died and they names a subsequent child John.

Have no proof for anything prior to James being married in Beechworth, Australia in 1860 - there are 7 James Molony's that could be him on various passenger lists - live in hope that we may one day narrow this down.
