We believe Ellen Ledwith is the daughter of Patrick Ledwith and Bridget Keenan She was born in 1864 based on the civil registrion of her death in Glenlough Westmeath.1909. She married a Peter Keane on April 27, 1885 at St. Mary's in Legan and the marriage was registed in Ballymahon the following day. We are trying to confirm that she was baptized and received confirmation at St. Mary's so we can confirm that we have the correct parents. There presently is no civil registration of her birth that I can find digitally.

We know of three other children born to Patrick and Bridget  that we have confirmed were born in Clygeen, Lenamore, Longford and were baptized in St. Mary's They are as follows:

Peter Ledwith Born 29 Apr 1869

Margaret Ledwith Born 25 Jul 1865

Brigidann Ledworth Born 19 Aug 1857

We are trying to locate the original parish registers for this time period. We have checked with the LDS and there Micro-film copy is of Questionable quality. These records may be domiciled in the Longford Library, the National Archives in Dublin, but the Original are alleged to still be kept by St. Mary's as it exists today after a complete restoration in 1952 and subsequent remodels since than.

Any information that you would be able to provide for her 2x Great Grandaughter living in Spain would be greatly apprciated

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out! I could not locate the baptismal record for Ellen on Roots Ireland. Here is an alternative that should solve half of your question. Below is the civil marriage index record for the marriage of Peter and Ellen. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1885. Let me know if you want to get a copy and I will forward instructions.

  • Hello Roger,

    Thank you for the quick response. Alas I already have the Original Marriage certificate from the GRO.

    I know her father is Patrick from this document but I need to confirm her mothers name since there are no civil registrations of her birth or Baptism the only choice now is to go to the Parish Registers for St Mary's.

    My simple request is do you know if the Originals are kept in St. Mary's today or are they available in the Longford Library or perhaps in the National Archieves in Dublin.

    I don't know where the originals are kept but presume the church. You could contact the diocese. They have an archivist and he should know where the originals are kept.
