We’ll be visiting County Louth (we'll be arriving tomorrow) and it would be great if we could find anything out about our families.

As it turns out both my wife and I have relatives from Louth. We’ll be married 32 years this October (we Honeymooned in Ireland) and only found out this year that we both had family that came from “The Wee County”. My wife knew all along and still has a cousin in Omeath.

My great-great-great grandfather, James Murray, was born in 1801. He married Mary Sharkey 18 December 1831, in Tallanstown. He was a native of the parish of Clonkeen.

My G-G-G grandmother was born in Co. Louth in 1809, a native of Arthurstown.
Her obituary lists her sons; John, Thomas, James, Felix and Charles.

My wife’s grandparents were from Omeath. John Lowe (born abt. 1897) was from Cornamuckla and Rosaleen Hardy (born abt. 1896) from Knocknagoran.
They immigrated in 1923.

For Omeath try this site and maybe contact them locally, see http://www.carlingfordpeople.ie/ Also on Facebook there is a Cooley Old Photos section, Cooley is the peninsula Omeath is on near Carlingford. The Carlingford People site gallery has been down for a long time and I do not know why. 

Arthurstown is near Tallanstown which is close to Ardee. The Irish phonebook is here https://www.eirphonebook.ie/# There are 8 Sharkey in Ardee and 18 in Dundalk with one near Tallanstown. Back later.

In the 1850s there was a land survey done and you can find it here, http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS… each name of landowner / tenant comes with a sheet which when you click pops out and at the bottom you will see a site number such as 20. Then there are two map cons which you can open and enlarge which will show you the plot number 20 and on the top right of the map is a bar which you can drag left and it goes into a modern map to show you were it is if you were touring the area you could find it still, all maps form earliest are here and can be overlaid on each other I understand, see http://www.osi.ie/ 

The library in Dundalk is the base research library for Louth but it is doubtful they have much pertinant to a specific family that is not online, also the archives for Louth are in Dundalk, again unlikely to have specifics on family. http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Library/Genealogy-Research-Sources/ and http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Archives/ I see they seek you to make an appointment a week in advance but if you are of a mind you could give it a try, distance travelled etc.

A very good site for Louth is here and while it has no certs it contains lists of people drawn from various registers over the centuries. You can search the names there, http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ Search Wildgoose Lodge murders which was carrie out in your ancestors time in the general area, there was a book released on them some years ago. Migh see some ancestors there. Also in the 1824 to 1838 period there were tithes collected from those of 1 acre or more and the lists are here http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/ I concentrate on Sharkey as Murray is a name that pops up in each county, have one myself, see on in Cornamucklagh Carlingford too in the tithes.

When in the area there a couple of recommendations to give you in case you have some free time, firstly http://www.newgrange.com/visitor.htm the full tour takes about 3 hours but there are shorter ones if you stick to just one passage grave, you would need transport to get to all these places, there are tour buses and local services. Also I only went here last year for the first time and have been back 3 times, takes maybe anhhour, no charge as it is in use as a graveyard locally but so peaceful and interestng, no charge but donations accepted, say €5 for the two of ye. sorry for all the typos in my previous missive, should read before saving, the parish you are seeking is Tallanstown and the Catholic parish registers are here, not always an easy read espeially if you have no dates, only searched by year and month and sometimes wrting is poor with bits in Latin. http://registers.nli.ie/ The do not go beyond 1900. By the way Louth is in the Diocese of Armagh so they will say tallanstown Armagh not Louth but geographically in Louth, little window on main page after search shows parish and those around it. Civil records for RC post 1864 and some church records are here but often no parent or partner if marriage given. See https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ There are very few church records on the site.

Joe,. I'm only after checking through my mail now. Clonkeen n phillipstown old parishes made up the northern part iof modern day tallanstown parish. Clonkeen church is called churchtown locally. There is an old graveyard at it with limited headstones. Phillipstown graveyard appears older to me, but a beautiful setting. Reaghstown church and graveyard is the main church for old clonkeen n part of Phillipstown now . I'm not sure if the church records or priest lives in reaghstown today .

There are still Sharkey's in the area. I've heard my mother's people speak of them. I'd have to ask if any Murray old family around. If you e-mail me at moynalty@irelandxo.com with phone or mobile contact details, I try give you some help if you still in the area. I doubt turning up on a doorstep will get you your roots back to early 1800 era, unless you very lucky and met their family historian.

Hi, For years, I have been seeking information on my ancestor, Bryan Sharkey, who was from County Louth and came to U.S. mid-19th Century at about age 19. My cousin Tim Sharkey and I visited County Louth and found many Sharkeys but could not find any solid leads. But I too think he was from the Tallanstown area due to our research. At some point, it appears his Mother (name unknown) joined him in Ohio. They may have come through New Orleans. I even hired a researcher but still hit dead ends due to the need to go through all the paper work at the parishes. I have done a DNA test that is on Ancestry.com.
