  • Hi

I am not sure if there is a volunteer so I am posting a reply as I answer queries about Drogheda which is 10 miles or 16  Kms away.

Collon is about 4 miles or 6 Kms south of Ardee on the main Dublin road and is on the Meath border but located in County Louth. It is a small village.

what other info do you need as you appear to be on top of it.

a website for Louth is here and very good is here http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/index.html and contains numerous grave entries.

a history site for mid Louth is here and may assist as it is near Collon if not incorporating it.

    http://www.midlouthhistory.com/

    Hope that assists.

    Regards

    Pat

  • Hi again

I see there is a history site there with an email of a gentleman who you might try.

See http://www.collonhistoricalsociety.com/ and apparently the Foster and Masserenne families were there, I see on the JB Hall Freeservers site the 2nd family have been around since Cromwell and got lots of land.

I will be meeting a native tomorrow evening and will enquire and see if she knows but the History Society might be your best bet.

The most high profile one nearby is Slane Castle about 7 miles away Lord Mountcharles and I think the family name is Conyngham.

If I get any more info tomorrow I will let you know but let me know if you find anything about the family for my info please.

    Thanks

    Pat

  • Hi  William

spoke to the lady this evening and the main landowner was Lord Masserene. His land is now Mellifont Abbey and run by the Monks on Collen (locals say Cullen). The site is here http://www.mellifontabbey.ie/

and is a newer monastery than the ruins of the famous Old Mellifont which is circa 5 miles away nearer Drogheda.

is it possible your ancestor was with the same employer all the time in the different counties.

also the Land Registry and Valuation Office have land transfer records and very soon the Valuation Office are giving a talk in the National Library of Ireland for 30 minutes which may be helpful if you are near Dublin. See http://www.nli.ie/ for dates etc.

    Happy Hunting
