Hi

I have just joined. My Mum's side are Irish. Our Kneafsey ancestors came from Corradrishy/ Curradrish to York and then to Lancashire. Patrick Kneafsey and his wife Mary Battle. Some went on to the USA.

Only the sister Lizzie remained in Curradrish and she married Thady Mulderrig.

Best wishes

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a Patrick Kneafsey in Corradrishy.

Not sure if this is the Patrick married to Mary Battle or his father.

I located the 1901 and 1911 census records for Thady Mulderrig and Lizzie Kneafsey. Thady died between 1901 and 1911. Lizzie had 11 children with 8 living in 1911.

  • Hi Roger

Thank you so much for taking time to look up my family in Corradrsihy. I believe the Patrick you found in the Griffiths Valuation is my Patrick. I assume but do not know for certain that the farm where his daughter Lizzie and Thady Mulderrig are living in 1901 is the same farm but this is possible as no sons seem to have remained in the area. I went to Corradrishy a number of years ago armed with the description of the building from the census returns looking for houses that matched. I don't know if you would know - is there any way of identifying a house from the 1901 and 1911 census returns? I wonder if there is a map associated with the census.

I have been researching by family for more than 35 years so I have gathered quite a lot of information. I have recently found a Kneafsey family in Derbyshire in the 1851 census who I think may be this same family (in which case Lizzie was born in Derbyshire althought the 1901 and 1911 censuses say she was born in Ireland.) I have tracked one son from this family to York where my direct Kneafsey ancestors were found in 1881.  I am trying to find evidence that this is definitely the same family. The Kneafsey seem to have moved often between England and Ireland - I assume this was originally for seasonal work.

Sadly Patrick died in the Ballina workhouse in 1884 - from gangrene after an injury.

Once again - many thanks for your help.

The 1901 and 1911 census records won't help with identifying a house and there are no maps associated wiith the censuses.

What you need would be the cancelled valuation books which show the changes in property ownership from 1856 to 1900+. See the link below for background. Right now for the Republic, these books are not online but hopefully will be in the future. The books are online for the six counties in Northern Ireland. Go to the PRONI web site to see examples.

    http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/revision-books.html

www.askabout ireland.ie has the Griffiths and can show you which plot was leased by Patrick Kneafsey. You can then use other maps to see the property today.

I assume the cancelled valuation books are in the National Library. Also, the Mormon Church has microfilmed the books and you can likely order the film through them.

  • Thank you.

I had forgotten that. I have used the Valuation books for Co Down at the PRONI
