My grandmother grew up about 3-4 miles away to the south, in the parish of Killasser, east of Foxford, and I have Loftus relatives from there.  There's a townland called Graffy in that parish as well.

I see 4 x James Hughes, what was his approx birth year,  to find the correct one.

I checked my family records, and it turns out that there was a Bridget Loftus who was one of the witnesses at the wedding in Killasser of my great-grandmother, Bridget McDonnell to Thomas McNulty, on 5 March 1869.  Presuably, that Bridget Loftus was one of Bridget McDonnell's cousins.  The wedding probably took place in the sub church in the townland of Callow, which is not far from Attymass.  I'm not sure of the dates in your family, but the Bridget Loftus in my records would presumably have been too old (probably born around 1845-50) to be your grandmother, Bridget Loftus, but she might have been her mother or an aunt.  There have been several marriages of my famiy members to Loftus's, and I visited a first cousin of my mother's, PJ Loftus, in Ireland many years ago.  If you've done DNA testing and would like to compare results, mine are posted at the GEDMATCH site as kit T780556.  I've located several second and third cousins with roots in that and nearby parishes through the GEDMATCH site, and have also found other matches (including some Loftus's) where we have been unable to establish the exact connection, since the records do not go back far enough.

I was really wanting just to SEE Derrynabaunshy in the same way that I got to see Cartron. I did see that map you sent but couldn't "see" it on the maps in my phone that we used to get about. I should have done more homework.

My husband and I did have a wonderful morning in Cartron, meeting such kind people.

My Gr Grandf James Hughes was born about 1855 and I have the 1901 & 1911 census records for the family. I thought trying to find the exact location of "House 9 (1901) or House 14 (1911) would be impossible but maybe the general area would be enough.

My mother had a cousin (?1st or 2nd) James Hughes who was about her age or perhaps a bit younger. He emigrated as a young man to Canada and become a physician. He was married to Eileen. He was raised by his GF "the strongest man in that part of Ireland" per family lore and returned to IE to see him just before he died at 95+. "It's the last time i'll see you for I'm sticking my spoon into the wall" are his parting words per family legend.

Margot, I do have the 1901 & 1911 records for my GM also. The folks in Boston were quite thorough in recording fa's names and places of the immigrants so it was easy to correlate.

My Gm, Bridget Loftus, born in Sallymount, Cartron,  changed her name to Beatrice on arrival to her mother's (Gallagher) cousins in Boston. They told her it would be hard to get a job as Brahmin matrons called all maids "their Bridget" but looked down their noses at those whose actual names were Bridget. My Gr Aunt, originally Bridget Agnes Hughes, became Agnes for the same reason, I suspect. I could not find her listed on the census and she was not yet in Boston, so I'm assuming she was "working out" at some wealthier person's home. She was recorded on board  her arrival ship as Bridget but was Agnes for the rest of her life including all civil or church records.

Hi Barbara, if you go back to the 1911 Census...where it says cenuss images available,  as you look down the list in blue you will see 

HOUSE AND BUILDINGS
there are 17 listed on each page, click on house and buildings you will see they are 3 houses/dwellings away from the school.

in 1901 they were 6 houses from the school. 
The numbers were just counted as they were in the street, could have been either side of the road no one really knows.
