Thomas Ludden went to Scranton, Pennsylvania USA about 1850, the same year he married Mary Early, though I don't know if they  married in Ireland or the US--MNFRC can find no marriage.  I think he might have been from the townland of Carrowmore in the parish of Burrishoole because the Tithe Applotment shows a Patrick Ludden there, and a Patrick Ludden born about 1790 lives with Thomas in Scranton in 1860.  Other Scranton Ludden / Luddons were from the Westport / Newport area and the name seems most common there and in Islandeady.  Most immigrants to Scranton were from Mayo, though some were from Sligo.

  • Sorry I cannot help you more, but I did look and couldn't find any Early families around Newport / Westport on the tithes, so I'd assume they married in Scranton.  I also looked at Griffiths, and found Luddens in Islandeady and Oughval parishes.

I have ancestors from Burrishoole parish that also went to Scranton at the same time period (1850-51), so I'd say your assumptions might be right.  Unfortunately, records for Burrishoole are quite poor for that time frame.  Have you exhaused all Scranton area records?  I've had very good luck at finding baptismal records at St PEter's Cathedral in Scranton (that was the main catholic church for the Irish at that time), also with PA Vital records (death records cost $3 each) as well as with some of the Scranton birth / death records on microfilm, via family search.

Hope this helps, and ask more if you need help with Scranton records, as I've used them alot!

  • Thanks so much!  I have not requested any records from St. Peter's but that would be smart.  I know everyone in my father-in-law's family is buried at Cathedral Cemetery.  Unfortunately Thomas died in 1900 so before the really useful state death records.  I have never been able to get a good death date for Mary Early but she was alive in 1900 census.  I may make a trip to Scranton before we go to Ireland in Sep.
