I am Luann Hughes, my Ancestors came from Kilfian in the late 1840's. They came with a good sized group from the same area and wnet through the state of N.Y. via the Erie Cannel, up and around the Great Lakes and landed at Grand Haven along the east shore of Lake Michigan and went up the Grand River as far as the Lamont landing(?) then trecked inland to settle the village of Marne and built a Catholic Church there. I have some details on a web site, I am trying to reasearch the families who all came together. My HUGHES, also - GOLDEN, LOFTIS/LOFTUS, HEALY, HOBEN, WALSH, O'HEARN. http://www.macatawa.org/~devries/Irish.html

Luann,
Thanks for the post - my own family was from Kilfian, but settled in Scranton PA. They reportedly had family in Michigan, but haven't been able to trace them. Do you know what townlands they came from? Have you checked the parish registers at www.nli.ie? Kilfian has some early records. I'm happy to take a look if you supply a bit more info.
cheers,
John

Luann,
I am researching my Irish ancestors who came to Michigan from Ireland in 1872: Thomas Martin Langan and Margaret (Hoban) Langan, both born in Mayo around 1820. They came with their daughter, Margaret T. Langan (b. 1857, Mayo), to Muskegon, Michigan very near Marne.
I believe I have identified Margaret T. Langan's sisters -- Catherine Langan and Bridget (Langan) Hoban -- in the 1901 and 1911 censuses as residing in Rathiskin. My public tree is at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/43947695/family If you are not a member of Ancestry.com, give me your direct email address and I will send you an "invite" to view my tree.
My DNA research is showing cousins with the surnames of Langan, Hoban, Loftus/Loftin, and Healy/O'Healai. Also, I have several mathches with Langan's in Pennsylvania. I think that there may even be some Hughes; I will have to look.
I would be interested in your research and any information that might lead me past my Langan/Hoban "brick wall."

I have a complete history of the Golden's from Marne (formerly known as Berlin).
All of the names you have mentioned are included in this history.
I also know the story of initially settling in Pennsylvania and then the move on to Michigan.
