Asking for a bit of help, please. In my search for Malley and Flanagan family, with birth/baptism records from Kilgeever Parish, some of the civil records from the irishgenealogy.ie site, show, for example, an 1866 civil birth record for Thomas Flanagan, of Philip Flanagan and Bridget Malley. The place of birth, on the civil birth record, is shown as Runith, Kilgeever (Louisburgh, Westport, Mayo Co.) and this Runith, Kilgeever location is on a few other of the civil records as well. So far, am unable to determine if Runith is a village or some other designation. Any assistance is very much appreciated and I send my thanks for your help. Mollie

    I don't live in Ireland so this is a guess. On the internet I found Runith might be the townland Roonah. I found a death record for a Philip on RootsIreland (subscription). Maybe connected to Thomas??

  • Thank you very much for your help. With your input, I did a bit more searching. Looks like perhaps what I saw written as "Runith," may in fact be Roonith, near Kilgeever/Louisburgh. Thanks again for helping. Mollie

  • Kilgeever and Runith

    There is a townland in Kilgeever called Roonah this is commonly spelled today Roonith it could in the past have been spelled Runith. To further complicate matters. The pier in the townland of Agany from which the ferry to Clare Island departs is called Roonagh pier. The western part of the townland of Aghany spelled Accony today is called Roonagh.

    It may be helpful to check the 1901 census, "National Archives census", "search by place," "Mayo" "DED"  of Aillemore, the Townland of Roonah. The Townland of Aghany is the DED of Emalgh. Until recently there were Flanagans and McEvillys in the Roonagh part of the townland of Aghany but they might also have been  those family names in Roonah in the 1860's

  • Thank you so very much, Sean. Very much appreciated. Searching for my families has been quite the adventure, a delightful one. As I looked online for the distance from Roonagh pier to Clare Island, I learned it is about 3 miles (5 kilometres). This is all very helpful, as I am, at present, attempting to determine if it is reasonable for my Pat Malley and Honor Flanagan to have children baptised mid 1850s-early 1860s in Kilgeever Parish, and then be found in Kill townland, Clare Island, with a possible death there about 1898. I have no familiarity with the area, but it seems this is all in the 'general neighborhood' with a bit of water in between. Again my great thanks for your help.
