I am stuck on Patrick Grady, I don't know his wife or parents. Born about 1810 perhaps LeCarrow or Strake on Clare Island. He is father of William Grady born 1841 in LeCarrow.

Also, stuck on  Michael Gavin B 1817 and his wife Honor Gavin from Carrowmaglouglen, near Murrisk, Westport, Mayo.

  • Sheila:

I found Michael Gavin in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing living in Carrickmacloughlin townland in Oughaval civil parish. Full civil registration strarted in Ireland in 1864. Assuming Michael lived a long life, I looked for civil death index records in the Westport registration district. I found a Michael Gavin born 1819 and died in 1894 and another Michael who was born in 1812 and died in 1892. Possibly one of the two is your relative.

RC records for Kilgeever parish including Clare Island do not start until 1850 so I don't think you will find a baptismal or marriage record for Patrick Grady.

  • Sheila,

Lecarrow can also be Laccaroe townland depending on which record group you are looking at.You may also see it as Lacarrow in the one of the census years.  If I remember correctly, there are six Leccarow townlands in Clare County:

    - Lecarrow Lower

    - Lecarrow Upper

    - Lecarrow Beg

    - Lecarrow More

    - Lecarrow South

    - Lecarrow North

There is a great article called "The six faces of Lecarrow" or maybe "...of Laccaroe" on the Clare Library site in the Past Forum.  See www.clarelibrary.ie

My Macs are in the Upper / Lower pair.

    Best of luck to you,

  • James, I think that you may be referring to Clare County, whereas my people are from Clare Island. Sorry if I miscommunicated that.
