Just joined the parish of Turlough. Hope I can find some information on John Healy from Turlough, born in the early 1800s and married Jane McDonnell.

Can you provide any more data on John and Jane? When were they born? Marriage year? Did they emigrate? Turlough RC records are available on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie starting in 1847. Roots is a pay site to view actual records. There are only 3 Healy households in Turlough parish in 1901 and one of the head of households was born in Co. Roscommon.

Hi Roger
I don't have a lot of information, but I did find a marriage record for a Jane McDonnell (address unknown) and a John Haly from Turlough. According to some family members, Jane may have come from Scotland. No record of either set of parents on the marriage record. The witnesses to the wedding were Peter McHale and Richard McDonnell. The marriage took place on 16 Feb 1862.
According to the census Jane was widowed by 1901. They had a number of children. One, namely John Joseph Healy was born in 1874 and joined the RIC in 1894. I cannot find any definite record for the death of either John or Jane.

I looked through the civil death index records in the Castlebar registration district and found a possible record for John which is the first record below. Jane was in the 1911 census and her age was shown as 73. There were no Jane Healy records in the Castlebar district which made any sense ie. after March 1911 and over age 70. I looked to the Ballina district just to the north and there was a record for a jJne Helly who died later in 1911 and was 72. This may be a longshot but it is the best I could find.
You can get copies of death records from the General Register Office for 4 euros each. If you plan to get copies, let me know and I will forward instructions.

Thank you so much for that information. I also notice that there was a Jane Healy in Turlough on the 1901 census and that her age was recorded as 54. I wonder is she the same Jane Healy who was recorded on the 1911 census as being 73. If so, there is also a difference in the age of the two children who were still at home in 1911. Could this explain why there is no further record of a Jane Healy aged over 70 in the district? Confused! Which graveyard or parish are they likely to have been buried in?
I would also appreciate if you could forward the instructions for obtaining the birth and death certificates.
Regards

I think the two records are the same Jane. Many times the 1901 age was understated. The 1908 Old Age Pension program started in 1908 and there was an incentive to report a more accurate age in 1911. You had to be 70 to get the pension. I can't explain why Sarah's and Fanny's ages only went up 4 years. Below are the GRO instructions.
The nearest church is Holy Family in Parke.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the even,. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
